The town continued to grow until it had a population of 5,000 people by 1914. At its peak in 1920 Big Rapids was home to 10 businesses and employed 150 people. However, during World War I the city suffered significant damage as a result of the war effort and eventually went out of business. In the late 20th century Big Rapids experienced significant growth as an educational center with several schools established within the city limits including Big Rapids High School and Big Rapids Community College. In addition to its educational institutions, Big Rapids also became known for its potato industry which continues to be one of the city's most important economic assets today.
