Maga coffee history can be traced back to 1875, when a Dutchman named Jan Hendrik Maga founded an early roasting company in the town of Big Rapids, Michigan. The company was later renamed Jan Maga Coffee Roasters and continues to make espresso and cappuccino products today. Maga coffee has been cultivated by many different people over the years and its origins remain unknown. In 1999, Jan Maga's grandson, Ronald van den Heuvel, started research into the history of maga coffee and discovered that it was once grown in South Africa. Van den Heuvel then traveled to South Africa to learn more about maga coffee and found that it had similarities with African coffees such as Robusta and Super Tuscan. Van den Heuvel decided to bring maga coffee back to America and established Jan Maga Coffee Roasters in Big Rapids in 2003. We continue to roast our own beans – including our popular vanilla-scented magasins – and distribute them throughout Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Wisconsin and Illinois. In 1867, Mexican immigrants settled in Big Rapids and started to grow coffee. Over time, the Mexicans began to sell their beans to local farmers and businesses. Big Rapids, Michigan is a small town in the state of Michigan. The population was 1,055 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Peninsular River about 12 miles east of Lansing and about 25 miles west of Detroit. Big Rapids is one of four towns in Wayne County, Michigan. The area now known as Big Rapids was first settled by German immigrants in 1837. The first permanent settler was Peter Sager, who built a log cabin on the current site of the City Hall building in 1838. In 1840, John Hahm founded what would become the First National Bank in what is now the downtown core of Big Rapids. In 1847, James Aiken erected an old sawmill on present-day South Main Street in what is now downtown Big Rapids. This mill continued to be used until it was destroyed by a fire in 1897. In 1849, Swiss immigrant Johann Friedrich Bischoff immigrated to America and founded the Bischoff Brewery here in Big Rapids with his brother-in-law Gottlieb Lengerichs. The brewery produced beer for many years until it closed down during Prohibition because it did not have a liquor license. In 1941, when World War II began, local businesses teamed up to produce munitions for the war effort and local breweries became military suppliers; however, production stopped after 1945 due to prohibitionism again becoming an issue throughout America at that time (the brewing industry had been exempted from regulation under President Roosevelt's New Deal). The population increased rapidly following World War II as people migrated from rural areas into cities looking for jobs or opportunities; however, this growth also caused some problems such as social conflict over scarce resources (such as land) and potential competition from established businesses; these challenges were particularly pronounced during economic downturns which led to job losses and decreased housing values within city limits. However, despite these issues and setbacks during post-war times Big Rapids experienced significant redevelopment beginning around 1970 with new high school construction followed by numerous shopping malls/stores along MLK Boulevard culminating with the establishment of Little Traverse Bay State Park near downtown Little Traverse Bay Village beginning in 1984 which has seen continuous development ever since including several new hotels/motels addition over time most recently being completed just north of town limits adjacent to MPRI University where training students for medical research has long been an important facet

The first town, Big Rapids, was founded in 1795 by a group of Englishmen who named it after their large river. The town wasn't very successful and was abandoned within a few years. But new settlers began to arrive and build up the town around 1800. By 1825, Big Rapids had a population of about 350 people. Over time, the town developed into a major commercial center with several banks and businesses. In the 1840s, Big Rapids became an important stop on the Michigan Central Railroad. The railroad helped spur economic growth in the area and made Big Rapids one of the most important cities in Michigan.
