Big Rapids, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the seat of St. Clair County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 382, up from 364 at the 2000 census. The city is bordered by St. Joseph to the west,Grand Rapids to the east, and Muskegon Heights to the north and south. The first Europeans to visit what is now Big Rapids were French explorers in 1719 who named it "Lac du Diable". The area that makes up today's Big Rapids was part of Hudson's Bay Company territory until 1817 when it became part of US-Canada as part of The United States of America. In 1824, Big Rapids became a town under charter from US president James KNOTT on land granted by Governor John CRAWFORD for "the defense and support of his government." In 1827, steamboats arrived in Big Rapids from Detroit with goods destined for Grand Haven, Michigan; they docked at what is now known as Lighthouse Park on rapids near where Lighthouse Towers still stand today. This created an opportunity for business owners in downtown Big Rapids to start selling watercraft and baitfish licenses which quickly became popular among anglers statewide. The steamboats continued providing service until 1938 when they were replaced by diesel boats due to advances in transportation technology! In 1907, Charles Kettering founded Flint Hills Motors Corporation here in downtown Big Rapids using his profits from selling Jetta cars across North America during World War I (his father had built radios within Flint Hills Motors). After Kettering's death in 1928 his son Charles Jr., took over control of Flint Hills Motors Corporation which would later become Chrysler Corp.. In 1937 Charles Jr.'s wife Eleanor died giving birth to their only child Chuck - this event would lead Chuck into starting his own company called Eastman Kodak which eventually merged into Xerox PARC (now compound interest corporation) back then called Eastman Kodak Photographic Research & Development Inc.. AfterChuck's death his widow Lois started her own company also called Eastman Kodak Inc.. There have been several other families that have controlled businesses around here including: Mead family who ran grocery stores before becoming car dealerships; Harriman family owning successful steel mills before becoming hoteliers; Burt family running various manufacturing plants including auto parts production before becoming restaurant owners... so on and so forth! Today there are several large businesses located Downtown like Kroger Supermarkets (largest store), McDonalds (largest restaurant), Dick’s Sporting Goods (largest gun store), YMCA (largest fitness center) along with numerous smaller businesses like small printing shops etc... It has been said that one reason why Downtown has remained relatively untouched since its heyday is because many business owners have kept their buildings unchanged or upgraded while larger establishments have either closed or moved out altogether leaving Downtown with a much more diverse set of businessesites compared to most areas throughout Midwest United States! The first Europeans to visit what is now Big Rapids were French traders from Quebec City looking for land to sell to Native Americans on their way back from trading with Russia at Fort Mackinac on Lake Superior in 1697-98. They named their find "Grand rapids" (Great rapids), but no one ever reached it because river navigation improved so much by this time that they never again needed to build a fort thereabouts; rather they made GrandRapids Castle on Point Gratiot just upstream from present-day downtown Big Rapids The first permanent settler in what is now Big Rapids Township was John White who arrived about 1800 and claimed part of what is now Monroe County White moved westward overland across upper Peninsular country until he reached what is now Twin Falls Township near modern day Postville on July 4, 1800 map showing his discovery White reported finding rich soil near present day Postville White's claim was accepted by both US Congress but not admitted into US because he did not have proper title to property

By 1945,Big Rapids had reached its peak population size with over 1,000 residents. However, during the postwar era,Big Rapids experienced rapid decline and eventually fell behind neighboring communities in population and economic significance. Afterward,Big Rapids declined further until it reached its current state in the late 1990s. Today,the town has few remaining resources and is home to only a handful of residents who continue to use its services as an emergency response center and for local tourism purposes.
