The Michigan National Guard was formed on November 3, 1862 as the 7th Regiment of Infantry. The regiment served in the Union army during the American Civil War. On April 4, 1865, the regiment was disbanded and its members were combined into the 2nd Battalion of Michigan Volunteer Infantry.
Berkley is a town in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 2,746 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Wenatchee, MI Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Berkley was Simon Kenton in 1824 and it officially became a community on November 1, 1828 when three other towns – Allendale, Northville and Southgate – merged to form the new city of Grand Rapids. The name Berkley may have come from one of several small ponds located near what is now downtown Berkley. Alternatively, it may be derived from "berk" or "berry" because early fruit trees were found there by early settlers. The first post office in Berkley was established in 1829 and remained open until 1872 when it changed its name to Gratiot after John Gratiot, a wealthy landowner who donated land for a public square on Front Street in downtown Grand Rapids. Today's Gratiot Square accommodates both the town hall and several smaller businesses including law enforcement headquarters and the former home of Griffey Jr.'s baseball team (now used as an academy). In 1898, two brothers named Harry Hurd opened their own general store at 301 Saginaw Rd which remains one of the largest retail stores today in town. In 1907, George Wenzell bought 5 acres southwest of town for $1 per acre to build his farmstead that still stands today - one of only a few remaining examples from that time period still standing intact throughout all Ortland Township gobbling up farmland eastward since then; this area now includes most of downtown Grand Rapids! In 1930-1931 dentist Dr.. Edward Condon operated his practice outbuilding on what is now Main Street between First Avenue/Grand River Boulevard and Fourth Avenue just west/southwest of current day State Street/Clinton Road; he would later move his dental office also outbuilding onto Third Avenue north side (current day Justina Drive) across from present day IH 54 just southwest corner (old Hwy 4)of modern day Collegiate Care Health System property! This building still stands today as Lankford Dental Offices! In 1949-1950 Dr.. Harry Fenton opened an optometrist business adjacent to Lankford Dental Offices; this location would become known as Dentist Row due to its high concentration rate (approximately 50%+) optical sales within any given year! A few years later Dr.. Julius Weigl established himself with his own practices on Court Street between Second Ave./Front St., just east/northwest off US 23 Business Loop extending into present day Northwestern Mutual Building site northeast corner First Ave./Garrison Road). Weigl would continue serving patients until his death at age 88 during 1990 amidst much celebration by staff & family following diagnosis & treatment for rheumatoid arthritis!!! From here on out things began changing rapidly with over 60 establishments opening within 3 years becoming well known collectively as The Ark!! That same decade saw even more establishment with recent additions such as Wellness House located just east off Third Ave./Griffin Road adjacent to Church services being offered upstairs inside presentday Polytechnic University buildings lobby garnering additional attention !! One could go on indefinitely but suffice it to say that Berkleys history has been fluid like our people themselves !!

The army was not well-equipped and lacked trained officers, so the president ordered state militias to be organized into companies and brigades. These units served as self-sufficient militias until 1776, when they were federally organized into regiments under the command of generals. Throughout the Revolution, the National Guard played an important role in defense by providing necessary manpower and supplies to other branches of government. In 1799, Congress authorized largescale military recruitment through a process known as bounty hunting. By 1800, there were over 2 million soldiers in American service who were mobilized for war with France and Spain. After victory against Napoleon in 1812, the National Guard became an integral part of Reconstruction in South America after that country’s devastating civil war.
Berkley is a small town in the heart of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. It has been called the "City of Rocks" for its many granite boulders and other natural features. The first settlers in Berkley were farmers who arrived around 1815. They named their town after they found a small rock on their farm that looked like a Berkeley coffee beans plant. Berkley became an importantdoor into the fur trade because it was the only town on the west side of Mackinac Island that could be reached by boat from Marquette Bay. In 1827, Berkley was incorporated as a village and began to grow as an agricultural center with several farms, stores, and homes. The city developed rapidly during the late 1800s due to its location at the junction of two major railway lines. By 1900, Berkley had over 1,000 residents and was home to four banks, two insurance companies, three newspapers (one weekly and one monthly), two hospitals, three churches (two Methodist and one Catholic), several schools (grades Pre-K through 12th grade), a library, and four factories including one that manufactured automobiles. By 1915, Berkley had grown to more than 6300 people with over 100 businesses catering to both local residents and visitors. The city experienced some significant growth during World War I which led to an increase in population by almost 25%.During World War II there was an influx of war veterans who began moving into Berkley from all over Michigan. This increased economic activity led to new housing developments being built along Cass Avenue which became known as "The Strip". Many businesses closed during wartime but reopened once hostilities ended; this included five banks that functioned unchanged until 1978 when they merged into First National Bank of Detroit
Berkley, Michigan is located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and was named for Samuel Berkley, a fur trader. The first place to be settled in what is now Berkley was on the east side of the peninsula. In 1836, the town of Berkley was platted and it became a part of Detroit Territory. In 1849, Berkley became a part of Lansing Township. On July 1, 1856, Lansing Township was consolidated with other townships in Wayne County to form Macomb County.On January 1, 1860, Berkley became a part of Oakland Township in Macomb County.
