It is the third-largest city in Michigan and one of its five largest cities by population. Berkley's rich coffee history goes back to 1892, when it became the first city in Michigan to import coffee from Colombia. Today, Berkley is home to over 50 coffee businesses, including some of the biggest names in America such as Peet's Coffee and Starbucks. Berkley is a city in Berrien County, Michigan, United States. The population was 953 at the 2010 census. Berkley is the county seat of Berrien County. It is part of the Detroit metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what would become Berkley was John McLaughlin in 1823. He founded a store on the northeast corner of Woodward and Main Streets which became known as McLaughlin's Store. In 1830, he married Sarah Young and set up shop on what would become Elm Street east of Main Street. John Young & Son ran the store until 1868 when it was sold to Simeon Burch who renamed it Burch & Company. In 1872, James Hurlbut bought the company from Burch and continued to run it until his death in 1915. During World War I, Berkley served as an airfields for both American and Canadian bombers and as a receiving station for troops coming overland from America. In 1926, Simeon Burch's grandson, Arno Burch (1906-1994), inherited the company from his father and continued to run it until his death in 1994. In 1978, ownership passed through two more families before passing to Harry Wohlgemuth (1920-2002) who operated it until its sale to Alsup Enterprises in 1984 which made it their corporate headquarters until 2001 when they moved into their current building on Woodward Avenue; this building also houses Alsup's retail stores as well as their computer technology department and other administrative functions relating thereto The original McLaughlin Store property now contains several apartments built between 1927-1929 by developer David Eisenson after his purchase of adjacent land that had been undeveloped since McCloughans time On October 15th 1907 Arno Burch created "The Michigan Journal" print publication business out of a garage located at 715 South Broad Street; This business failed within 3 months due to low circulation levels however Arno kept trying new ideas including starting an evening paper service called "the Evening News". On November 8th 1907 Arno resigned from "The Michigan Journal" partnership with partner John Purdy due to personal differences with Purdy about continuing operations under one name or another; however Purdy continued running day-to-day operations under that name until May 1914 when he sold all interests in The Michigan Journal/Detroit News Company to George Wohlgemuth who operated it together with Wohlgemuth Broadcasting Corporation which originally consisted of Wohlgemuth Broadcasting Corporation - Detroit News Company - Grosse Pointe Park Press Co.; these companies were merged into ABC Television Corporation effective January 1st 1954 pursuant to General Mills' acquisition of GE Inc.) On October 15th 1957 Grosse Pointe Park Press Co., owneried by David Eisenson changed its name back to "The Michigan Journal" effective November 8th 1957

Berkley is a small city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Oakland County. The population was 21,836 at the 2010 census, making it the third-most populous city in Oakland County after Detroit and Ann Arbor. Berkley is home to Northwestern Michigan Community College and is also located near Midland and Muskegon Heights schools districts. The first reference to Berkley was made by Augustus Belknap in 1824 when he wrote about "a small village on the banks of the Rouge River." The name originated from two settlements that were established along a Native American trade route called "the Great Lakes Way" (now I-94). One settlement was called "Berkley" after Captain John Barker, who explored this route for Congress in 1795–96; another was called "Neenah," which means "place where Birch trees grow." In 1827, General James Wilkinson named what is now Berkley as his new headquarters for military operations against Tecumseh's Indian tribe during the War of 1812. In 1830, John Neely became proprietor of a sawmill townsite north of present-day Berkley on the Rouge River. By 1834, there were 11 families living in what is now downtown Berkley when it incorporated as a village under charter from Ypsilanti Township on June 15, 1835. The first school opened in downtown Berkley on March 12th, 1846 by Mrs. Lillie Hinton with 25 students attending her class taught by Revs Drury and Whitehurst; three years later she added an additional room for instruction which led to her being renamed “BerkLEY Female Seminary” following approval from then-Mayor George Biddle Sr.. In 1850 Mr. Strong built a gristmillinery complex consisting of six buildings including: millrace house (now demolished), storehouse (now used as office building), flour elevator (now part of Midland Library), waterwheel (now part of Woodward Museum) and blacksmith shop; this development helped spur growth throughout downtown Berkley through mills until 1865 when electric lights replaced gas lamps throughout most industrial areas across America due to advances made by Thomas Edison; however because electricity did not reach all parts of town until well into the 20th century many historic structures still remain unlighted today such as Mrs Hinton’s Seminary which can be seen towering over much older buildings near Third Street & Main Street
