The Coast Guard Auxiliary in Berkley, Michigan started its operations on December 1, 1923. The Auxiliary waschartered by the Michigan state legislature and was led by a volunteer captain named Harry A. Shively. At the time of its inception, the Auxiliary consisted of only 10 officers and men. In 1934, the Auxiliary’s first station was established at Mackinac Island. The Harbor District Department located at Hoyt Point became operational in 1936 followed by Grand Haven in 1937 and Petoskey in 1938. In 1941, the Coast Guard Auxiliary purchased land at Mackinac Island for its new station. When it opened, the Station consisted of a small office building with a single room as well as six berths for crewmen and twelve gun mounts for guard duty. It also had two armored cars which patrolled the harbor during times of war or emergency. After World War II ended, there were no more military conflicts on our coastline so Coast Guard missions dwindled but they didn’t go away completely; instead they turned into law enforcement activities such as DUI patrols and litter removal from local beaches (Shively himself is credited with New Jersey’s first litter prevention campaign). However, when President Donald Trump took office in January 2017 he announced his plans to end federal funding for all types of environmental organizations across America including those that help protect our coasts – including Coast Guard Auxiliaries – through executive order number 11625 “Pursuing optimal coastwise management practices through cooperation with other Federal agenciesâ€[1]. This order would eliminate many jobs across America due to cuts to defense spending which have directly impacted these organizations like the Coast Guard Auxiliaries specifically[2]. As a result of this Executive Order what we see now is an increasing trend where coastal communities are being targeted because their governments don’t support their maritime interests[3],[4]! So what does this mean for coastal communities like Berkley? Well according to some reports it could mean layoffs up to 50%[5], less funds available for security measures such as patrols or infrastructure projects[6], reduced access to resources like manpower or equipment etc…. We hope that President Trump reverses his Executive Order soon because without them we could see even worse news down south!

Berkley was first settled by German immigrants in 1827 and became a village in 1847. The town was incorporated as a city on December 15, 1908. Berkley is named for John Berkley, an early settler who homesteaded near the current city limits in 1827.
Berkley was founded in 1837 by George Berkley. He started a tannery, and later opened a store. In 1850, he donated land to the town for a school and library. The first school was built on the current site of the Berkley Library in 1851.
