Berkley is a city in Wayne County, Michigan, United States. The population was 21,531 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Wayne County. The city is located in the Grand Rapids metropolitan area. Berkley took its name from George Berkeley, an American philosopher and mathematician who lived in London in the 17th century. Berkley was laid out as a town by James Worthy on July 22, 1824, following his purchase of 640 acres (247 ha) of land along the Kalamazoo River from David Minto. At that time it included what are now portions of downtown and east side neighborhoods including Hastings-on-Kalamazoo and Woodward Heights. In 1827 Worthy reorganized the town into two wards with one vote each; these were called "Old Berkley" and "New Berkley". New Berkley was located to the north and east of where Old Berkley now stands while Old Berkley lay to the south and west of where it now resides. The first school in Berkley was built on South Main Street about 1826 by Drury & Dayhoff as a female seminary for girls only. It became known as "The Female Seminary", but soon thereafter changed its name to "George Washington School" because President George Washington had been born in 1747 near present-day Kentwood, Michigan (just across Lake Huron from Detroit). A new building was erected on Elm Street southwest of what is now North Main Street between 1828 and 1830; this building served as both schoolhouse and courthouse until 1911 when it burned down after being damaged by firemen during World War I Corvettes parade through downtown . A public library opened on October 12, 1829 at 222 State Street which remained open until 1951 when it moved to its current location at 227 State Street under then Mayor Louis Bourgeois (1951–1965). On February 2, 1865 – just three weeks before he died – Abraham Lincoln signed legislation establishing Wayne County within Michigan making Berkleys home county seat once again. It wasn't until 1907 that mechanical streetlights began serving downtown streets – becoming fully operational in 1922 – thanks to funds provided by local business leaders John Naylor Sr., Harry Chandler Sr., Milton Sibley Jr., banker Will Rogers III & First National Bank president Elihu Root during Ford's gubernatorial campaign against Republican incumbent Wilfred Ebbetts (1887). This same year also saw construction begin on what would become rotunda number one within City Hall complex housing today’s City Hall Annex Library services; this addition followed plans drawn up by noted architect Cassatt who also designed Public Square Municipal Building [now Renaissance Center] adjacent thereto across Clinton Avenue from City Hall Annex Library which opened May 2nd 1896 with hired help from Jardine Haughton architectural firm with $1 million budget for design erection alone! From here civic programs gradually evolved into their present form over ensuing decades culminating with biennial celebration/parade honoring our nation’s birthday “Emancipation Proclamation 100 Years Ago tomorrow” August 6th 2017 marking bicentennial commemoration!

The third section of the road was built in 1850. The fourth and final section of the road was built in 1855. By this time, there were already many people living in Berkley and it became an important town for trade and transportation. Berkley also became an important center for education because it had a school that opened in 1838. Berkley also had a library that opened in 1840. Berkley was founded in 1871 by George Berkley and his brother-in-law, John A. Brown. It became a town in 1903 when it amalgamated with the neighboring towns of Houghton and Milan.
