The first mission of an A-11A Superfortress was flown on November 25, 1947 from Elmira Municipal Airport in New York City to RAF Lakenheath in England as a gift from the United Kingdom. In 1951, General Hoyt S. Vandenberg activated the USAF and ordered all bombers to be equipped with nuclear weapons. The Berkley Air Force Base gift history began in 1947 when the United States Air Force purchased a large number of planes and aircraft parts from the airplane manufacturer, Boeing. The planes were used to train airmen at the base. In 1957, the United States Air Forces moved its headquarters to Berkley and it was known as Air Forces Station Berkley. In 1965, AFB Berkley became an independent military command with its own personnel and equipment. In 1978, AFB Berkley was renamed Aerospace Defense Command (AFC) after World War II allies merged into one single country, the United States of America. Today, AFB Berkley is home to more than 12 thousand American troops and their families who serve in multiple branches of our armed forces including the Army National Guard, Marine Corps Reserve and Coast Guard Auxiliary.
Berkley, Michigan is a small town in the Western Michigan region of the United States. The population was 1,883 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kalamazoo-Portage County metropolitan area. The community began as a farming village on an Orchard River floodplain about two miles northeast of Berkley proper on U.S. Highway 11 in 1884 and was named after Professor Alfred Berkley, then head of Detroit's Institute of Technology. It developed rapidly into a nearby city due to its location on important wagon roads connecting east and west Michigan and its access to water resources. The first post office was opened in 1888, and by 1904 it had become one of the largest cities in the country with a population over 10,000. In 1907 Berkeleys first department store opened; it became one of America's most popular shopping destinations for women until it closed in 1969. In 1955, Berkley became home to world's first computer system called "Ender", which helped promote electronic democracy around the world before being decommissioned in 1991. Today, there are few if any traces remaining from that era other than one small park located near downtown where students used to play checkers while their mothers multitasked at home; this park has been renamed North Park since 2009 due to development efforts adjacent to it that have changed much of what is visible today within blocks radius around Ender Park (see picture). Berkley, Michigan is a small city in the Kalamazoo Valley of Michigan, United States. The population was 9,752 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat for Washtenaw County. Berkley has been inhabited by humans since at least the late Paleolithic period. The first permanent settler in what is now Berkley was James Birch in 1800. In 1836, John Houghton founded a sawmill on the Muskegon River and named it after himself. By 1860, there were over 100 businesses in Berkley with a payroll of $1 million. In 1871, coal mining began and quickly grew into one of the largest industries in town. The mine employed more than 2,000 people and produced more than 50 million metric tons of coal annually until it closed in 1978. The decline of coal mining led to increased manufacturing throughout much of downtown Berkley during the late 20th century but today only a few remnant buildings remain from this era including the Newberry Hotel which once served as headquarters for both local newspapers and radio stations; The Masonic Temple; and Armstrong Wagon Works which manufactured wagons and carts used by farmers for transportation purposes during those times before they became known as antique vehicles or carriages
Berkley was founded in 1871 by members of the Michigan Agricultural Society. It became a city in 1903 and is the county seat of Wayne County.
