Benton Harbor is a small town in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is located on the shore of Lake Michigan, about 20 miles east of Detroit and 50 miles west of Chicago. The town was founded in 1824 by Captain George Stephenson, who named it after his friend and local settler, Major General James K. Benton. In 1825, the first military post in what is now Benton Harbor was established there as part of the Fourth Regiment United States Infantry under Colonel Moses Norris. From 1827 to 1830, when it became a county seat, Benton Harbor was also home to one of the first Masonic Lodges in America. The first school in Benton Harbor opened in 1829 and served grades PreK-12th until 1938 when it merged with nearby Gratiot Township Schools to form Gratiot-Benton Harbor School District #2. The current high school campus opened in 1965 and servesgrades 11-12th; Middle School (grades 6-8); andElementary (grades PK-3). This gave rise to many futuremilitary gift recipients including:General James K. Benton (1827-30), Brigadier General Nicholas Biddle (1830-32),Major General John Prentice (1834-36), Commodore Perry (1837), Rear Admiral Augustus Wooster Kane (1839)and more! In 1938, Gratiot Township Schools merged with neighboring Benton Harbor School District #2 to form Gratiot/Benton Harbor School District #2! Today, we continue this tradition by having our current high school campus open for grades 11 through 12th along with many other educational programs!

Benton Harbor is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and part of the Detroit metropolitan area. The population was 61,594 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Wayne County. The name is derived from a bend in the river Rouge which flowed through it before it was channelized and drained by Lake Huron. The first settlement here was made by French traders on an island in what is now downtown Benton Harbor when they arrived there during the 17th century to trade with Native Americans. In 1812, General Anthony Wayne fought his final battle at this location against British forces commanded by Sir John Pemberton, becoming one of history's most celebrated military leaders and earning himself a reputation as "the great American general." A year later, he married General Tecumseh Sherman's daughter and set out for Mexico City to negotiate peace treaties there after that country had become involved in a war with Great Britain. On his return journey he stopped at Benton Harbor where he inaugurated what would become known as "the great road" between Detroit and Grand Rapids--later renamed State Route 10--thus connecting these two key industrial centers on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Benton Harbor experienced rapid growth following World War II due to its strategic position along Interstate 94 as well as its status as a manufacturing town during the era of post-war America's dramatic economic transformation. Today, Benton Harbour remains one of Michigan's fastest-growing cities, ranking second behind Lansing overall among all U.S.-based cities with populations over 50,000 according to Forbes magazine’s 2017Midtown report card (behind only Phoenix). In recent years, however, some residents have voiced concerns about gentrification and how it has impactuated levels of crime and social unrest within their community while also worsening environmental conditions such as lack of fresh water access or polluted air quality; these issues have been met with mixed success by city officials since they are not without their own challenges too (e.g., increasing demand for expensive new homeless services). Benton Harbor was founded in 1834 by Daniel Benton and his brother, James. It became a town in 1851. The first post office was established in 1835. In 1840, the Michigan legislature passed a bill creating the township of Benton Harbor. The town incorporated on October 1, 1850.
