The United States Army Garrison Benton Harbor was activated on November 4, 1893 as part of the Michigan National Guard. The unit served in various capacities until it was disbanded on July 1, 1947. On October 26, 1918, the Benton Harbor Infantry Regimentimental Association organized and raised a unit to serve in World War I. The regiment was known as the "Benton Harbor Rangers" and served with distinction until it was disbanded on September 2, 1919. In 1948, the United States Army Garrison Benton Harbor became an Army Reserve Unit under command of the Sixth District Commandant at Camp Randall Barracks in Marquette Heights. It remained an inactive reserve unit until its disbandment on July 1, 1947.

Benton Harbor is a city in Mid Michigan, United States. The population was 11,471 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in the county of Benton and the third most populous city on the Great Lakes region. The area that now makes up Benton Harbor was first settled by Europeans in 1796 as Miami Township, Berrien County. In 1836, it became part of Grand River Township and later became part of Washtenaw County. On November 8, 1898, it was made a part of Lansing County and has remained there ever since. The history of Benton Harbor starts with what is now Miami Township where European settlers arrived in 1796 to start a new colony called "Miami". They found an area that had good soil and water resources for farming but no other settlements nearby so they decided to move into this new land. They named their settlement after John Hartley (1719-1793), one of their original investors in the colony. Hartley donated land to the township and helped organize its creation which occurred on February 25, 1800. He also served as mayor from 1800-1801 and 1802-1803 during these early days when Lansing County didn't have any elected officials until after statehood! Hartley's donation allowed for construction of a road through his land which branched off from State Road 10 southwest to become US Highway 88 near present day downtown Benton Harbor. This road became known as Hartley Street because he donated it to the townspeople along with some buildings on it still standing today including Hartley Hall which still serve as a public schoolhouse! In 1836, Grand River Township was formed out of parts of Washtenaw County when Michigan statehood came into being following the United States Constitution’s amendment giving citizens voting rights on Indian reservations! This change meant that many residents within Washtenaw County wanted their township to become part of Lansing because they felt that Lansing would be more advantageous geographically due to its larger population size compared to other townships within Michigan! However because Benton Harbor wasn't specifically mentioned in either document (and didn't join Lansing until 1898), nothing happened until 1838 when Grand River Township voted unanimously not to secede from Michigan! As time went on various businesses opened up around town including grocery stores, millinery stores etc., all while people continued working farms or doing odd jobs around home just like before! In 1886 local physician Dr Samuel Sutter moved his medical practice from Troy Park outside Detroit into what is now downtown Benton Harbor making him one of very few doctors practicing outside metropolitan Detroit at this time! soon afterwards he opened another medical office (#2) across Main Street from current day City Hall building!! This Practice survived until 1999 when it closed due primarily to health concerns related to lead poisoning however #1 remains active today as an antique store next door!!! During this time period local newspapers were started forming such as The Daily Herald which began publishing in 1887 & continues today (although its website may not match up perfectly with past reporting) & The Wolverine which started publishing in 1893 !! In 1902 local farmers organized themselves into a grain elevator company called Northern Indiana Elevator Company Ltd., creating oneofthe earliest Grain elevators businessesinMichigan!! During prohibition years throughout much OF America many small bars&restaurants sprangupto providealcoholic beverages(pumpkin spice martini anyone?)to customers who couldnt get enough booze!!!!!!!!! After prohibition ended many smaller bars/restaurants closed down while larger ones survived but eventually succumbed too competition from large liquor companies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! From here things really picked up for Benton Harbour starting withthe openingofthe first auto dealership locatedJust north off Main StreetIn 1903!!!!!!!!! And even more businesses started popping up like schools(Villa Madonna Elementary Schoolopened 1909) & hospitals(Hospitality Hospital opened 1935)allwhile people continue working 2dayjobsoutsidehomejustlikebefore!!!!!!!!!
In 1824, Benton Harbor was founded as a trading post on the River Rouge by fur traders. The town grew rapidly during the 1850s and 1860s thanks to its location at the junction of two major trade routes. By 1870, Benton Harbor had become a city and was home to over 200 businesses. In 1875, the city built its first brick building. In 1907, Benton Harbor became part of Lansing, Michigan and in 1912 it merged with neighboring Port Huron to form the City of Flint.
