It declined during World War II as factories closed down and residents were forced to flee to other cities; however, it regained its prominence after repeated outbreaks of air pollution that caused health problems for many years until new policies were put in place to address this issue. Battle Creek is a town in St. Joseph County, Michigan, United States. The population was 9,713 at the 2010 census. Battle Creek is part of the Battle Creek–Kalamazoo Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to inhabit this area were the Algonquian-speaking Potawatomi, who lived on the east side of battle creek and along its banks for several hundred years before they were displaced by the arrival of European settlers in 1796. In 1812,battle creek was part of a tract belonging to John Stephenson, an American fur trader and landowner who also founded Kalamazoo. After Stephenson's death in 1815, his land passed into private hands until it was purchased by George Haggerty in 1826. Haggerty constructed a gristmill on battle creek and named it after himself; the mill continued in operation until 1907. In 1828, Nicholas Wright established a sawmill on battle creek and named it Wright Saw Mills after himself. The sawmill continued in operation until 1922 when it was sold to Wm Jorgensen of Lansing for $2 million USD. Jorgensen spent extensive renovations which added a new floor to the mill buildings and renamed it Jorgensen Saw Mills Inc.; the mills continue to operate as an independent company today with headquarters located in Lansing. In 1905, Battle Creek became one of twelve towns incorporated within St Joseph County; during its incorporation process, Battle Creek enacted a law which prohibited interracial marriage within its borders without prior approval from both constituent councils; this law remains effective today as Battle Creek bans same-sex marriage only through registered marriage licenses issued by county officials). In 1925, two brothers—George Haggerty Sr., Jr., and George Haggerty III—founded what would become Grosse Pointe Farms National Laboratory (now Michigan State University) on their family farm north of town; Grosse Pointe Farms remain one of MSU's largest landowners to this day. The lab was initially dedicated to developing statistical methods for studying ecology but soon shifted its focus towards nuclear physics research following World War II due to advances made by America's atomic energy programme; during that time period Grosse Pointe Farms became involved with many important development projects such as plutonium production at nearby Pueblo Bayou Arsenal while also providing support services such as barns and gardens for MSU students living on campus). A number ofsignificant events took place during October 1944 when more than 60% of all Jews living within three miles (5 km)of Nazi-occupied France were transported back across the English Channel en masse under Operation Overlord; among those transported were many prominent academics including Max Bornstein who would later found molecular Genetics Laboratory at Cold Spring Harbor Hospital famine relief program). On 14 October 1944 four days after liberation ended Nazi rule over France occurred when General Eisenhower proclaimed " Vichy Française" or "Free French" into effect beginning 1 November 1944 general curfew had been lifted allowing free access for civilians back home although certain restrictions still applied such as travel restrictions for scientists etc.). In 1814, the town of Battle Creek was founded by General Anthony Wayne and Captain Christopher Stiles.
