On December 6, 1941, the United States of America was attacked by Japan. The Japanese navy immediately mobilized and began attacking the American fleet in Pearl Harbor. In response to the attack, the United States Navy sent a force of warships to be stationed in Auburn Hills, Michigan. This deployment was known as the Battle of Lake Erie. The USS Constitution (CV-19) and USS Lexington (CV-15) were both sent to battle against the Japanship Yamato. However, they were ultimately destroyed by Nishimura Kido's flagship Kaga. The Battle of Lake Erie is widely considered to be one of history's most significant naval engagements. It resulted in the loss of two American shipwrights and three sailors dead, as well as damage to twenty ships and more than $2 million in damages caused by enemy fire. Additionally, it marked a turning point for US naval doctrine which would later lead to victories in World War II.

Auburn Hills, Michigan is a small city in the U.S. state of Michigan that is the county seat for Washtenaw County. The population was 7,612 at the 2010 census. It lies on the southern border of Detroit and is bounded by Dearborn to the east, Ann Arbor to the north, and Livonia to the northwest. The city has been served by Auburn Hills Municipal Airport since 1941. The area now comprising Auburn Hills was first settled as part of what is now Clinton Township by Swedish farmers in 1824.[1] In 1837, John Davenport founded Davenport School in what is now Auburn Hills, which became one of the largest schools in Michigan. It opened with grades K-12 in 1839 and was eventually renamed McCutcheon Academy after its first principal, James H. By 1863, all of Wayne County had become organized into districts; Auburn Township was within District 2 (then Warren) of Stroudsburg Township,[8] but it defaulted on its contract to joindistricts when it formed itself as a separate city on April 1st of that year[9], following a protracted battle between township leaders and City officials over control over municipal services[10]).
