Auburn Hills is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, located in the Sanilac County area of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The population was 21,717 at the 2010 census. Auburn Hills is one of four cities in Muskegon Heights Township and one of two cities (the other being White Lake) within Muskegon Heights Township's namesake village, which incorporated as a village on November 1, 1875. The town was named for George Augustus Auburn, an early settler in central Michigan and brother-in-law to John Davenport. The first European settlers arrived in what is now Auburn Hills in 1814 when Tobias Johnson built a cabin on his farm east of present day Elmwood Avenue and south of Woodward Road. In 1825 Henry Ford established Fordson's tavern there while prospecting for land near modern Central Avenue and Gratiot Street; he named it after his uncle Amos Ford who had settled near Detroit some years earlier. In 1830 Isaac Taylor erected a small log cabin on what is now Maple Street southeast of Woodward Road; he called it "Taylor's Tavern". A few miles to the northwest, Daniel Dunklin founded Dunklin & Co., a store and post office that survives to this day on East Main Street between Dearborn Boulevard and Farmington Avenue (now Lisbon Road). In 1834 Alexander McNaught built McNaught House on what is now Northside Drive northeast of present day Walled City Road; he named it for his father-in-law Neil McNaught who had come from Perthshire, Scotland three years earlier. Auburn Hills became an incorporated town on November 1, 1875 with a population size estimate of 10 residents; its boundaries were based at then-current Central Avenue north to Dearborn Boulevard east to Farmington Avenue south to Walled City Road west along present day LisbonRoad (this township would later be split into Muskegon Heights Township and White Lake Township). On May 14th 1903 James Jicks set up camp inside what are today Green Acres Shopping Center off Grand Traverse Boulevard just north of Shiawassee River before moving his operations into permanent buildings several months later; Jicks renamed them "Jacks Hardware" after himself and founded Jick's Candy Company Limited which still operates outof that property today although retail sales have ceased since their closure during the Great Recession.
