Macdonald during his time as Canada's first Prime Minister, British speculator Andrew Stevenson purchased 640 acres (248 ha) around what would become downtown Ann Arbor for $1 per acre from David Duchovny, one of Macdonald's main supporters. By this time local resident Major General Lewis Cass had also settled in nearby Dearborn County with his family after purchasing land east of downtown from Duchovny some years earlier. In 1824 Alexander Graham Bell located a small patch of land northward of subsequent downtown on which he erected his residence—the first permanent structure within reach of most residents today outside central business districts such as Chicago or New York City—known then simply as "The Gardens." Of particular note are three standing structures surrounding Bell's home: Cadillac Castle (named for an early owner), Third Avenue Baptist Church (built 1889), and Trinity United Methodist Church (dedicated 1907). All were added to this list more recently; Third Avenue Baptist Church was removed from listing in 2016 because it no longer meets current zoning standards for churches.) With few exceptions throughout much OF Michigan’s history there have been no African Americans living within or close by any municipal boundaries until relatively recent times – even today’s affirmative action programs commonly ignore areas larger than 10 square miles!
