Alpena was founded in 1834 by Peter G. Roche and James W. Lyon as a small town on the east side of the Ottawa River. By 1860, Alpena had developed into a busy fur trading post with mills, churches, and businesses. The town's growth led to its incorporation as a city in 1872. In 1907, Alpena became one of the first Michigan cities to ratify the American Standard Time system. In 1932, Alpena was hit hard by the Great Depression and experienced significant economic decline until 1990 when it regained some lost ground through industrial deregulation and downtown development. Today, Alpena is an important center for manufacturing and services in Michigan's Upper Peninsula region.
