The USS Constitution-class battleship was originally donated by Commodore John D. Stockton to Alpena in 1936 as a memorial to America’s naval heroes who had fallen in World War I. It served as a training ship for local sailors until 1949 when it was decommissioned and placed into mothballing status. However, in 1970 it was reactivated and again served as a training ship for local sailors before being decommissioned again in 1994. In 2006, it was donated back to the Alpena Naval Museum and now serves as a museum piece on loan from the United States Navy. Alpena is a city in the US state of Michigan. The population was 8,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Alpena County. The city is located on the north side of the Grand River and borders Muskegon Heights to the east and Southfield to the west. The area around Alpena was settled by German immigrants in 1824. In 1847, Alpena became a post office with John Pritzker as its first mail carrier from MKE (Grand Rapids). By 1870, Alpena had a population of 1,200 people and it was incorporated as a village in 1872. In 1907, Alpena became an incorporated town when it annexed portions of Muskegon Heights and Southfield Township. In 1925, General Motors established their Thunder Road Plant in nearby Rouge City which generated significant employment for locals during World War II; however local production ended after that plant closed in 1945 due to wartime restrictions on engine production. Afterward, GM localized their operations once again in nearby Traverse City until they vacated those buildings in 1978 when they moved their entire global headquarters to Korea under then-CEO George W Bush Sr.. The modern history of Alpena began with incorporation as an incorporated town on December 15th 1907 by order of Michigan Governor James Kieft; this happened just one day after both Muskegon Heights and Southfield Township were annexed into AlpenA by order of then-Mayor Harry Satterlee effective January 1st 1908 There have been many major changes over time to what has become today's flourishing community: some key examples include: First World War veteran Ralph Henschel starting farming here shortly after leave from overseas duty; establishment of schools here for boys or girls (grades 7-12) – leading to increased enrollment throughout all areas through lunchtime each day during school years 1909-1911; establishment/booming growth industry around aluminum smelting coming about with development along Ionia Rd (now Gratiot Ave ); addition/growth of automobiles manufacturing beginning during WWII – spearheaded by GM’s Flint Assembly Plant Most recently there has been continuing revitalization/investment taking place throughout downtown core area resulting in resurgence/expansion not only within business but also arts & culture precincts consisting now totaling 6 blocks across 2 levels including 5 large mixed use buildings dating back nearly 100 years including numerous notable businesses such as Macy’s Department Store & anchor tenant Jiffy Lube Auto Parts Downtown redevelopment project completed last year successfully achieving LEED Silver certification . On July 20th 2019, Mayor Donny Johnson announced plans for $25 million dollar expansion adjacent to current building next door which will include 2 large retail spaces capable seating up 1000 customers complete with private balcony overlooking riverfront walkway&restaurant space totaling 375 feet² surrounding public plaza making it possible for future hotel guests looking out onto riverfrontwalkway accessible without having increase traffic congestion

Today, Alpena is one of the most diverse cities in Michigan with a growing population of residents from all over the United States. The city has also been successful in developing new cultural attractions including an annual Jazz Festival and multiple art galleries which attract thousands of visitors each year.

The town was named after General Anthony Wayne and his troops during the War of 1812. The first post office was established in 1849, and by 1860, the population had grown to over 100 people. In 1861, Alpena became a city when it annexed the neighboring village of Northville. By 1880, the population had reached 2,500 people and Alpena was incorporated as a municipality. In 1903, Alpena became part of Lansing County when it was divided into two parts.
