Alpena is a small city in Mackinac County, Michigan, United States. The population was 7,890 at the 2010 census. Alpena is part of the Lansing–East Lansing Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is the county seat of Mackinac County. The first European to visit what is now Alpena was French trader Nicolas-Jacques Marquette in 1694 when he and his band of missionaries visited the area. In 1705, French fur traders Pierre Duguay de L'Isle and Antoine La Vigne found a route from Quebec to the Great Lakes region through present-day Huron and Michigamme Counties. They named their new territory "Mackinac" after John James Macdonald, then president of Canada. In 1806, U.S.-owned land south of Mackinac Island became an independent county called Michigan Territory; Alpena was included in that county on July 1, 1813. On February 14, 1817, Alpena incorporation as a village occurred with Wm. Hays as its first mayor Alpena's history can be traced back to 1840 when David Cagle opened a tannery on Front Street which he continued until 1865 when it closed due to competition from other tanneries in the town In 1862 Alpena set up its first post office under name "Emmonsville". That year also saw the opening of First National Bank building located on Main Street which remains active today as FirstMerit Bank during World War I (1914-18) development took hold with construction of barracks for local soldiers at what is now Fifth Third Field Park west of downtown On October 15th 1918 General George Smedley Butler surrendered at Fort McDowell near modern day Battle Creek and all Japanese forces were ordered home including those stationed in AlpenA by order dated January 26th 1919 After World War II ended there began massive subdivision across much of southern Mackinac County taking place primarily through deed sales and not open market practices like buying and selling stocks

Alpena is a small town in the U.S. state of Michigan, located on the western shore of the Kalkaska River. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It has been called "the granola capital of America" due to its abundance of cereal and other foodstuffs, as well as its location close to two major grain elevators for shipping these products to local mills. Alpena was founded in 1849 by German immigrants who named it after an Alpine peak in Switzerland. The first settlers came from Germany and Austria during the late 1800s and early 1900s, primarily seeking land grants that would allow them to settle in new territories opened up by the American Civil War (1861-1865). Many Germans settled in what is now Michigan Territory following the war, including Alpena. Some of these pioneers brought their families with them when they moved westward into what is now eastern Minnesota and northern Wisconsin; others accepted gifts from American citizens or volunteered themselves for military service in Kansas and Nebraska during this time period before settling down around Alpena. In 1847, John Friese established a ferry dock on the Kalkaska River just north of downtown Alpena; this dock served as a crossroads for travelers heading east or west along the river between Upper Saginaw County and Midland County. The ferries transported goods all over northeastern Michigan until 1956 when they were replaced by bridges across I-95 south of Lansing (and north of Grand Rapids). A mill race started near downtown Alpena soon after Friese's dock opened; this millrace provided water power for grinding flour which was then shipped downriver to various local mills. By 1860, there were three flour mills operating out of town: one owned by David Whitehead & Company, another by Isaac Miller & Company and finally Wm Hallett & Co.'s Mill #1 which became known as "TheBigHouse". When Prohibition began in 1919, many farmers converted to dry farming methods because it offered more efficient production than wet corn farming did at that time; however, many residents still continued to purchase flour from local mills since those were their only options at that time. By 1924, most resident had either left or moved away because wartime rationing had made food prices high enough replacement jobs weren't available locally despite efforts by several businesses owners to keep open some operations even though profits were low due mostly to changes in transportation patterns caused by World War II bombings raids on Detroit area factories . In 1951-1952 remains from post WWII era buildings were rehabbed with new roofs/windows/doors and front porch added inside original condition vernacular architecture Revival style homes typical throughout entire Great Lakes regionMILWAUKEE COUNTY MIAMI DOWNTOWN ALPENA
