Alpena is a city in the Mackinac County, Michigan, United States. The population was 12,567 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Flint–Holland Metropolitan Statistical Area. Alpena is located on the Black River and has a downtown area with several buildings that are preserved as national Historic Landmarks. The first humans to settle in what is now Alpena were Paleo-Indians who hunted game near by and gathered plants and fruits from local forests. In 1805, Nicholas Flournoy built a cabin on an island in the river and named it after his home town of Alphena, Netherlands. The islands in the river served as hunting grounds for Chief Ojibwe Pierre Menard's band of Chippewas before they were sold to fur traders in 1814. In 1819, Gervaise de Grasse founded Grasse Mines & Copper Company here with General David Dunbar as Vice President and owner of 100% interest. In 1830, John Fenton became Superintendent of Public Instruction for Huron County; he purchased land east of present-day Grasse from Grasse Mines & Copper Company which included all or part of present-day Alpena Township (excluding parts on each side of the river). He started construction on what would become Pioneer Elementary School between 1840 and 1850 when funding problems caused him to build just one building at a time instead of completing all necessary structures at once. In 1865, Genesee County was organized into Mackinac County; Alpena incorporated as a village in 1870 under authority from Mackinac County Board Of Commissioners. On December 2nd 1861 about 50 people came downriver from Marquette Rapids for winter quarters and established Fort Dearborn on Grand Island opposite today's Polish Village Hall across from Old Main Library/Museum Building (now Parkview Community Center). This fort held out against Tecumseh's Indian Expedition led by Captain George Armstrong Custer during November 1862 because supplies ran short and reinforcements could not be landed until January 1863 due to high water levels along the UpperMississippi Valley flooring route through which Custer had traveled northward earlier that year

During the party, generals and admirals presented Marines with presents including golf clubs, cars and holiday trees. 2) In 1978, the Marine Barracks at Quantico organized a Toys for Tots drive in honor of winter break for marine cadets. The event was attended by majors Vince Lombardi and Don Shula along with other top military leaders. toy drives were also conducted at various locations throughout the year. 3) In 2006, the Marine Corps Foundation donated 1 million dollars to provide financial assistance to needy families during hurricane Katrina's aftermath. This was the first time that the Marine Corps had ever awarded such a large donation specifically to assisting hurricane victims. 4)In 2007, Marines stationed overseas received specially made tents as part of their Christmas present package from home country commanders back home onChristmas evexoxo . These tents proved to be very popular among troops stationed overseas, who often request them when they get home from deployments
Alpena is a small town in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 7,814 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Muskegon County. The name "Alpena" first appeared on a map in 1836 and was derived from Alpena Creek. Alpena was platted in 1851 and became a city in 1912. The townsite that now includes Alpena was first settled by German farmers around 1800. By 1830, most of the original settlers had died from smallpox or other diseases brought over by the immigrants. That same year, John Snyder founded the Post Office at what is now First Street and Mound Road in Alpena Township. In 1836, General Lewis Cass appointed Snyder as postmaster general for Michigan Territory; Snyder relocated Post Office to Alpena to take advantage of its strategic location on the Great Lakes shoreline. The first store built in what is now Alpena opened on Main Street in 1837; it was called The Store of George Heringer (later renamed Pemberton). By 1840, there were six stores open in what is now Muskegon County; three were located east of downtown and three were located west of downtown. By 1860, there were twenty-one businesses operating within one mile of where present day First Avenue meets High Street NW: thirteen stores east of downtown and thirteen stores west of downtown (the last two being closed down during Prohibition). In 1871, when Muskegon County became part of Michigan Statehood, Averill Harriman donated land to become what would later be known as Harriman Park; Harriman Boulevard runs through much of it today. In 1876–77, local residents erected a frame courthouse which served as both justice courtrooms and village hall until replaced by a new courthouse built between 1906 and 1908; this courthouse still stands today on northwest corner lot next to Harbor Freight

After the war, Alpena experienced a period of rapid growth as its population increased to over 100,000.
