The Coast Guard gift history in Alpena, Michigan began with the establishment of the United States Coast Guard on July 4, 1790. The first Coast Guard station was located at Point Pleasant in what is now West Michigan. The first unit to be stationed permanently in Alpena was the Signal Corps detachment which arrived on October 15, 1873. In 1916, the First Naval District transferred its jurisdiction from New York City to Alpena. This gave rise to the present day Coast Guard district which includes all of Michigan and parts of Illinois and Wisconsin. The origins of the present day Coast Guard can be traced back to 1868 when a group of businessmen from Detroit formed a company entitled “Detroit River Patrol” to provide security for the river traffic between Detroit and other ports along the Great Lakes. The organization became known as “Michigan Light House Company” after being allowed by governor John Belknap to erect a light house at point where Mackinac Island meets Lake Huron. On December 21, 1868, Mayor Augustus Woodward presented a petition requesting that Congress create an additional coast guard squadron for operation east of cape au Lac in Upper Peninsula Territory (later named Marquette County). It wasn’t until May 10th 1870 that Congress approved this request and created an agency called United States Navy Shore Command with jurisdiction over all waters east of Cape Au Lac including Lakes Superior and Huron. With this new authority, shore command stations were established at Muskegon Heights (1871), Grand Rapids (1872), Petoskey (1875), Sault Ste Marie(1877) and Marquette(1879). On November 5th 1880 USS Constitution stopped at Point Pleasant dockyard while en route from Buffalo, New York laden with supplies for Mexico during its war with Texas. A contingent of Officers and men disembarked on shore for refreshments before being ferried back aboard ship following a gunnery demonstration by Commodore James Fenton USN who served as Officer-in-Charge ashore. That same year also saw Captain George Wickersham become Warden of Mackinac Island After long consultation with his superiors in New York City he recommended that instead Mackinac Island should serve as administrative center for both military posts on the Great Lakes region having seen no need for two separate posts Furthermore; garrison duties would not replace active service within territorial limits but rather could be delegated through Commander United States Forces Northwest Canadian Expeditionary Force Headquarters General Headquarters Departmental Affairs Detachment Western Canada Yard No 1 Fort Drum Barracks Eastern Ontario Dockyard Iroquois Landing Station No 2 One Hundred fifty nine officers & men under Captains JF Landis USN & GW Perkins USN had been quartered since late summer 1861 adjacent land offentice built barracks hospital stores depot bakery engine house warehouses clothing store cookhouse mess hall restaurant housed press office several small shops buildings interesting structures are: lighthouse government warehouse ice cream parlor

The Alpena Coast Guard Station was founded on October 6, 1903. The station is the oldest coast guard station in Michigan and one of the oldest in North America. In 1912, the United States Congress gave the Coast Guard a shore establishment at Mackinac Island to serve as a forward base for operations during World War I. The station was renamed from Fort Mackinac Island to its current name on November 1, 1922.
Alpena, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Alpena County. The population was 7,811 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Thumb River in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The first European to record sighting of what would become Alpena was Giovanni della Porte on July 17, 1696 while exploring lands between Georgian Bay and Lake Superior. He named it after his Italian friend and mentor, Alvise del Lago—the name meaning "the headwaters of a river" or "upper reaches (of a stream)", both similar to those he had just explored himself two weeks earlier. It wasn't until 1836 that John Bevis published an account of his journey from Mackinac Island across Lake Superior to its mouth on the Thumb River; he called it "Alpena". In 1847 John Prentice mapmakers added another town - Fort Gratiot - on what is now Alpena's east side as part of their mapping project for military purposes during the Mexican–American War. In 1875, Henry Ford came to Alpena with his family for vacation and decided to start manufacturing cars there instead of Dearborn Heights, MI because there was no other place in Michigan where he could do so successfully. Ford's first car was made here: The Model T Ford car which became popular throughout America during World War I due to its low cost and easy assembly line production methods; postwar versions were produced at nearby Piquette Claypools Factory until 1957 when they closed down due to environmental concerns about lead content in gasoline tanks). Ida Matson moved here from Detroit in 1906 after working as a maid for Mrs. Wright at her home on Wabash Avenue in downtown Detroit; she took over management of Mrs. Wright's household when Mrs."Wright passed away in 1907." Matson ran her business out of her home from 1911-1912 before moving into an office building on Main Street opposite Elmer Carruth Elementary School until 1933 when she sold all assets including her house back to Mrswright's descendants who continued runningMrswright's household through 1974." Ida Matson Day National Monument honors this woman who fought tirelessly for education for African Americans inMichigan during segregation days" Matson died October 25th, 1992 at age 92 years old surrounded by family members 1/2 mile from her childhood home which still stands today

Alpena is a city in Washtenaw County, Michigan. The population was 11,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Washtenaw County and home to Eastern Michigan University. Alpena has been inhabited by humans since at least 9600 BC. The first permanent European settlement in what is now Alpena was founded by French fur traders in 1799. The area that became Alpena was part of the Grand Traverse Treaty signed on July 20, 1815 between Ulysses S. Grant and Alexis de Tocqueville, which guaranteed passage for all commercial vessels through the Straits of Mackinac. The city's history begins with a small Indian village called Eganville located near what is now downtown Alpena on the east side of Mackinac Island. In 1827, General George Armstrong Custer made his way through this area during his famous march from Detroit to Malmstrom Air Force Base northwest of Lansing during the Black Hills War and encountered Chief Joseph who claimed ownership of most of what is now Alpena Township including Eganville Creek and present-day downtown Alpena. After enduring two weeks long battle with approximately 40 Native Americans led by Chief Joseph, Custer retreated southward into Canada without achieving any results other than exposing himself and his forces to possible attack by Plains Cree or Assiniboine Indians who had followed him northward from their winter encampment on Crystal Lake about 60 miles due west along I-75. In 1828, John Saginaw bought land adjacent to Gobles' Point Light House on Mackinac Island opposite today's downtown Alpena from Nicholas Gobles heirs then living on Crystal Lake near Gratiot Avenue Southeast in Chicago Heights until their death in 1892 when they conveyed title deeds thereto to their son Daniel Gobles Jr., who sold it back to Nicholas Gobles heirs for $5 per acre until May 6, 1907 when it reverted back to Alex de Tocqueville descendants as part of a larger grant under Act No., 2 (1890) legislating equal treatment for Indian tribes within the United States Congress entitled "Allotment Of Lands And Territories To Indian Tribes" subject only to appropriation by Congress upon appropriation thereof "for special purposes." The first post office located at Eganville was established on October 16, 1840; however its name never caught on as there were no stores or businesses open within a mile radius so residents started calling themselves "Eganters." As early as 1847 an agricultural society was organized here with members meeting monthly at Dearborn Chapel where local produce was brought in from fields west of Mackinac Island via canals dug across southern Michigan including those built near modern day Cadillac and Hollandale townships across Saginaw Bayouagee River between I-94W & US-2E close enough for wagon traffic but too far away for shipping activity; these days known collectively as Oldfield Farms after one early member prominent among them – Ebenezer Dearborn (1787–1868). Ira Matson platted what would become today's northeast corner lot at First Street & Main Road in 1850 being just east of Second Street current day's intersection with Main Street; he named it Matson Landing after former president James Kautz’s farmstead located immediately south across First Street east of present day Wabash Avenue southeast just south of Third Street where Matson Landing intersectspresent day Elmira Road northeast cornering past Fourth Street into Brushy Run Pond just southwest off Woodward Avenue) naming it after himself before relocated some 200 feet further down stream along Third Street because its width allowed more accessable waterfront property & improved water conditions making today’s site nearly identical except Lockport Harbor insteadof brushy run pond ). His plat included: 1 block wide “ Town Square” containing public buildings including Armory (now Eastern Michigan University), jail (now Eastern Michigan University Center), schoolhouse (now Masonic Hall), gristmill(later used as fire hall), wharf(later used as garage), . . . 5 blocks long “ Commercial Row” consisting mostly warehouses/stores/grocery stores etceteras wagons could unloaded there then loaded onto waiting steamboats moored along river bank while large barges took load directly onto river shore unloading throughout entire process thus creating ideal harbor environment also allowing easy access not only for shipping but also rush hour traffic coming& going @waterfront pier
Alpena was founded in 1824 by Potawatomi Native Americans. The town grew up around a canal that connected the Detroit River to Lake Huron. The canal was abandoned in the late 1800s, and Alpena developed as a small community of farmers and fishermen. In 1907, Alpena became an incorporated municipality. In 1925, Alpena joined the United States as a national city.
