Adrian, Michigan was founded in 1837 and is the oldest continuously inhabited incorporated community in the state of Michigan. Adrian is located on the Eastern border of Macomb County and extends into Wayne County. The community was named for General James Adrian, a U.S. Army general who fought in the Mexican-American War and also served as a brigadier general during the American Civil War. The first settlers arrived in Adrian in 1837 and built a log cabin on what is now State Road 7A. This pioneer group was led by Captain John Prentice and his wife Elizabeth Prentice. In 1840, General James Adrian donated land to the town to help support its growth. The original name of the town was Eureka but it changed to Adrian after he donated it to the townspeople. In 1847, Captains Edward Kappenheimer and George Weiser established a ferry service between Adrian and Detroit which helped grow trade within the community. The first post office opened in Adriansville on October 12, 1848 under the name Eureka Post Office. It later became known as Adrian Post Office until 1959 when it changed again to its current name of simply "Adrian". One of Adrians' most famous residents was Governor William Jennings Bryan who visited Adrian several times during his campaign for President in 1948. In 1969, Mayor John Russo submitted a proposal for building an ice rinks facility adjacent to Central High School which would become one of America's leading high school sports programs; this proposal ultimately won approval from educators throughout central Michigan and construction began that yearaster near Central High School with initial seating capacity of 1,500 students!
Adrian, Michigan was founded in 1834 by Adrian Township trustees. The township was named after General John J. Pershing, who fought in the Mexican-American War. In 1847, the village of Adrian was organized and became a part of the town of Adrian. The village contained a tavern, a gristmill, and an old schoolhouse. In 1859, the town of Adrian merged with the village of Albion to form the present day city of Adrian.
