In 1840, Gabriel Friesen established a grocery store and started selling beans direct to consumers in order to compete with local roasters such as John Peacock and Alexander Czarnecki. By 1845, several other small businesses had joined forces to form the Northwestern Indiana Brewers Cooperative which began marketing their own branded beans under the name of “Catherinetown Coffee Company”. In 1865, when Adrian was incorporated as a village, businessman Augustus Opdyke decided that he would like to open his own business serving beverages instead of just food items as many caterers at that time did not offer anything more than hot dogs or candy bars out front during regular business hours. This decision marked Opdyke’s departure from what had been consideredstandard commercial practices among many businessmen throughout early 20th century America- whereby they relied almost entirely upon institutional patrons (usually churches) for their beverage needs rather than developing their own retail presence outside normal commercial channels). The population was 11,692 as of 2010. Adrian was founded in 1834 by Danish-born farmers and fur traders who named it after their leader, Adrian Pettersson (1804-1876). The first post office was established in 1835. The city's history dates back to its incorporation as a village in 1899. In 1902, Adrian became part of the new county of Wayne County and incorporated as a town. In 1907, Adrian became one of the first municipalities to adopt a local fire code. The following year, it also adopted an ordinance providing for public education within its boundaries. In 1927, Adrian annexed neighboring Traverse City and began to build up its infrastructure. That same year saw the opening of what would become Adrian's first municipal library which still operates today under contract from the City government. Between 1928 and 1959, Adrian constructed three railroads that served as its main transportation artery: the Ontario Railroad (now Via Rail), Canadian National Railway ( now Amtrak), and Great Lakes Railway (now Grand Trunk Railroad). Upon their closure, these lines left behind a legacy of railroad infrastructure that still persists today including two light rail systems serving downtown Adrian today: Light Rail Transit District 1 (LRTD1) running along Woodward Avenue between Midtown Business Park and Highland Park Center; Light Rail Transit District 2 (LRTD2) running along Ionia Avenue between Northlake Boulevard/Highland Park Center/Midtown Business Park/Eaton Place; both LRTD1 and LRTD2 are integrated into one system name - "ADRIAN LIGHT RAIL SYSTEM" or "LRTD". In 2008, Adrian hosted the Miss America pageant which set records for attendance at a major UPN event with over 5600 spectators!
