The Worcester Navy Yard was established in 1795 as the first naval shipyard in the United States. The yard built warships for both the American and British navies, and produced many of America's most famous vessels including the Constitution, USS Constitution Museum Museum, USS George Washington Museum and USS John F. Kennedy Presidential Library. In 1939, the navy Yard was closed due to budget cuts and it was not reopened until 1987. The yard has since been retired but is still open to the public as a museum. Ships from all three branches of the U.S. military have been launched fromthe Worcester Navy Yard, including two presidents: Franklin D. Roosevelt (1939-1945) and Richard M. Nixon (1969-1974). Navy gift history can be traced back to 1795 when Congress passed an act authorizing construction of a naval shipyard in Worcester County on what is now Watertown Road. This facility became known as “The Navy Yard” because it operated primarily for building warships for both American and British navies until 1939 when its closure due to budget cuts led to its transformation into a museum today managed by the nonprofit Worcester Foundation for Children & Families organization Incorporated under common management with other member organizations of The Friends of The Navy Yards (FONYS) consortium which operate National Naval Reserve Fleet facilities located at Guantanamo Bay Cuba as well as Portsmouth Naval Shipyard et al., Walthamstow Naval Shipyards Ltd., El Segundo Marine Terminal Co., Litton Industries Incorporated, Brownells Incorporated etc.. When World War II began in September 1939, work on building ships at The Navy Yard commenced briskly with four new hulls delivered early that year - HMS Euryalus(BB), HMS Ganges(AG), HMS Lion(LF) and HMCS Athabaskan(CH). These were joined soon after by ten more ships totaling 248 boats which would provide escort duty during war against Japan! By late 1942 there were over 250 sailors employed at “The Yard” working on various types of vessels such as submarines Chaser(QK8/C2), Monaghan class destroyer escorts DD 622/624 Wickham class destroyers Caprice Mk IV (CV1) , Crusader Mk V torpedo bombers Liberator Mk XXVI Bomber Squadron VC3 Royal Air Force No 8 Group RAF Brunswick UK commandeered ex USAAF P-40 Warhawk fighters indigenous Twin engine Catalina flying boats VP2 Gloster Meteor attack planes etc.. In 1945 President Harry S Truman issued Executive Order 9066 giving authority for General Electric Company Limited (GEICO) to build nuclear powered aircraft carriers - these would be designated CVN-7 through CVN-12! GEICO had already built two prototypes - Essex Class Carrierswinning initial design competition held in 1943 but then abandoned plans due to cost overruns! However a contract was awarded in March 1946 for delivery of five Essex Class Carriers units plus associated equipment valued at $4 billion!! These turned out to be cancelled just one month later following enactment of Defense Production Act Of 1947! By this time however Admiral Hyman Rickover had become Director OF THE NAVY who decided that battleships were no longer needed on active service so all remaining Essex Class Carriers were stricken from navy list & sold off!! A totalof 16 nuclear powered Aircraft Carrier Units followed before finally being decommissioned& scrapped between 1966-1972 !! A few years later another program started up called Program Neptune which aimed atDeveloping new fighter jet designs based upon lessons learned from Concorde supersonic passenger transport system ! Unfortunately this program also ran afoul of budgetary constraints & ultimately never came about !! However some very promising concepts did see fruition such as Lockheed Martin Corporation’s F404GJ Thunderjet family designed air superiority fighter prototype tested flight trials starting in 1984 ! And even today some select members ofthe public are able view static displays illustrating aspectsof naval aviation during peacetime or wartime using various typesOf technology currently available

Worcester, Massachusetts is a small town located in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. It has a population of about 108,000 residents. The town is bordered to the north by Springfield, to the east by Worcester County and to the south by Hampshire County. The town was founded in 1736 as part of Contee Township. In 1801, Worcester became a separate incorporated village. As of the 2010 census, its population was 118,812. The history of Worcester begins with two early settlers, John Endicott and Peter Goodspeed. They arrived in 1643 and 1644 respectively from England. John Endicott donated land for a public square in what is now known as downtown Worcester and named it after himself. He also built an Anglican church on this square which still stands today called St Andrew's Episcopal Churchyard (now occupied by Brown University). The first school in Worcester was established on October 14th, 1736 when Rev Edward Winslow wrote "a letter patent" authorizing teacher training at Plympton Schoolhouse which he had just acquired from Nonnus Palmer (the proprietor). This school operated until 1839 when it was closed due to lack of students and teachers; however, it remains one of the oldest schools in continuous operation west of Boston! Reverend Ebenezer Brown started teaching classes at Plymouth Congregational Church beginning on November 1st, 1737 which continued until 1741 when he moved his classes to First Congregational Church where they remain today! In 1801-1802 there were two townships formed within what is now Worcester County: Contee Township (later renamed Westborough) and Northampton Township (later renamed Auburn). On February 14th, 1804 under Governor Elihu Burrall these two townships were combined into one new township called Worcester! It wasn't until 1830 that Worcester finally achieved city status; this occurred through an act passed by the General Court on January 10th issue number 827! At this time all municipal functions were placed within the newly created City Hall building located at 5 Elm Street - now part of Brown University! The City Hall building served as both Municipal House & Courthouse for many years before being replaced by their current facility – located just off Main Street – in 1963! Worcester's rich history would not have been possible without its many immigrants who made their mark upon our community during its formative years: Italians began arriving here starting around 1840 followed shortly thereafter by Irish Catholics; Poles arrived between 1850-60; Germans settled from 1865-70; Haitians immigrated beginning around 1870s while Japanese Americans began arriving following World War II
