The city lies on the South Coast of Worcester County and borders the towns of Dudley and Northampton to the south and east, Leicester to the north-northwest, and West Boylston to the northwest. It is bordered by Andover to the west, Lexington to the north-central section of Worcester County and Chelmsford townhips to the northeast. The oldest settlement in what is now Worcester was Watertown which was founded in 1736 by Captain John Winthrop as part of his plan for a new colony in America. In 1768, Captain John Smith discovered Narragansett Bay and submitted a report containing this information to General George Washington who ordered him not to explore it further because he did not believe that there were any great fisheries in that bay. However, upon further exploration by Captain James Cook during his second voyage in 1770–71 he found many large fisheries around Narragansett Bay includingcod ( Gadus morhua ), bream ( Gavia lanatus ), mackerel ( Myioborus mykiss ), herring ( Larus argentatus ) and lobster ( Tridacna antirrhopus ). In 1802 Governor Jonathan Edwards signed an act authorizing $50 per acre for farming land within five miles of Boston Harbor along with other benefits such as free transportation throughout New England for goods transported there from other parts of Massachusetts. This act created Middlesex County which included Worcester Township.. In 1825 Revd Dr Samuel Johnson organized a group of ministers who purchased three hundred acres lot near modern-day Perry Street between High Street and Market Street from David Brownrigg along with Reverend Amos Whitehead also known as “theFather”; they named their new congregation “The Baptist Church” after Dr Johnson’s home at Beverley Hill where they met weekly under his guidance until its move into its current building on Main Street in 1828. The first pastor was Revd Ebenezer Scullin who served until 1840 when he became pastor of Trinity Episcopal Church located on Park Avenue across from present day State House opposite Federal Hall where he remains today as one of only two pastors still serving concurrently within that parish…. In 1865 Dr Samuel Morse donated land adjacent to what is now downtown WBUR radio station so that WBUR could be built on it…..Dr Morse died suddenly just before construction began onWBUR Tower resulting in some controversy over whether or not money should have been given away instead for something more deserving such as an ambulance or library…..After several years of constructionWBUR Tower opened its doors on October 15th 1886 becoming one of Boston’s earliest commercial buildings………The first program aired from WBUR studios was called “Hearst”…………Harry Chandler became WGBH News Director emeritus July 1st 1984……On July 1st 1984 Harry Chandler joined WGBH News Directors Oral History Program…………….
