The Worcester Coast Guard Station was established in 1847 as part of the newly created Massachusetts Bay Colony. The first coast guard station was located on what is now the campus of Worcester Polytechnic Institute and it served as a stop for shipping traffic along the New England Coast. From its inception, the coast guard also played an important role in PROTECTING OUR COAST - patrolling the waters near our coastline to prevent smuggling, piracy, and other criminal activity. In 1951, the coast guard station relocated to its current location on Orleans Street in Worcester. As part of this relocation, a gift shop was also built on the property which still serves as our headquarters today. The store has been open since 1975 and offers a wide range of services including jewelry, fishing supplies, coastal memorabilia, and more. Today, the Worcester Coast Guard Station plays an even bigger role than ever before - helping protect our community from harm both ashore and out at sea. The Worcester coast guard has been providing service to the community since 1918. The first Coast Guard station in Worcester was established in 1918 and became known as Station #1. The current station is located at North Harbor Drive and Park Avenue in downtown Worcester. In 1957, the Coast Guard decided to establish a station near the mouth of the river Merrimack in order to provide better protection for residents and businesses along the riverbanks. The new station became known as Station #2 and continued serving the community until it was closed in 1984. In 1988, the Coast Guard decided to open a second Station #2 on Governors Island in New York City due to increased safety concerns around that city’s large harbor areas. This new location served as our headquarters for operations out of New York City until 1999 when we moved our Headquarters back home to Worcester after 9/11 destroyed much of lower Manhattan.
Worcester, Massachusetts is a city located in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, on the banks of the river New England. The population was 153,908 at the 2010 census. Worcester is also the largest city in Massachusetts by population and second-largest city in New England after Boston. Worcester's history dates back to 1630 when it was part of Plymouth Colony. In 1837, Worcester became a town and in 1912 it became a city. Worcester's economy depends on its many industrial businesses and its location within easy commuting distance of several major metropolitan areas. For example, major employers include Kimberly Clark Plc., Lehigh Valley Steel & Manufacturing Co., NEC Corporation, WGBH-TV (ABC), GEICO Insurance Company and Oracle Corporation. The City Council is composed of nine members who are elected at-large with three seats coming up for election every two years. Notable landmarks in downtown Worcester include State House (built 1775), First Parish Church (1722), Masonic Lodge No 3 (1793), John Fitch Battery (1824) and Central Park West (opened 1886). The most popular tourist destination in Worcester is Central Park West which includes such attractions as Fenway Park, Quincy Market, Watertown Common and Mount Auburn Cemetery among others
The history of the Coast Guard begins with its inception as a volunteer organization on October 16, 1917. National Guard units were activated to support World War I and the war effort when Congress passed the National Defense Act of 1916. The Coast Guard was created as part of the new Department of Commerce and Labor in 1920. The first coast guard cutter, USCGC Nautilus, was launched on December 12, 1921. In 1942, the Coast Guard acquired its first amphibious vessel, CGSS Obdulia. On January 3, 1943, CGSS Coral Sea became the first ship in our fleet to be sunk by enemy action while serving with distinction during World War II. During peacetime until 1949 there was no Coast Guard patrol service; it assumed this role from INS Sindh which had been decommissioned after serving in that capacity for two decades. In 1949-1950 an act entitled “An act to provide for better administration of law and order along United States coasts” was enacted into law by President Harry S Truman Amendments to the Internal Revenue Code (the Tax Bill). The townspeople voted to form a school district in 1857 and the first Worcester High School opened in 1865. Worcester, Massachusetts was founded by the Pilgrims in 1629. The city is named for Sir Francis Walsingham, who served as England's Prime Minister from 1598 to 1627 and played a major role in pushing for the English Reformation. After experiencing some of the most destructive fires in American history, Worcester became one of the few continuously inhabited cities in New England. The city has since experienced waves of migration, including people from Ireland, Italy and Portugal.
