The Worcester Army National Guard has been providing service to the United States since 1777. It is one of the oldest and most veteran-owned armies in the country. The armys history began with the Massachusetts Militia, which was raised in 1775 to support the British military campaigns in North America. In 1804, the Massachusetts Militia was redesignated as a regiment of artillery and renamed the Worcester Regiment of Artillery. On July 4, 1861, Worcester's regiment became part of New England Confederation army under command of General Ulysses S. Grant during the American Civil War. The Worcester Regiment served throughout that conflict and later participated in several major engagements such as Vicksburg and Appomattox Court House. Afterward, members of the regiment were merged into other regiments throughout New England until they were again disbanded on December 15th, 1865.
