The airforce gift history goes back to World War II when the USAAF was created as a result of the National Defense Act of 1938. The act placed all Americans under military rule and gave the president power to appoint generals and other high-ranking officers in order to provide defense against possible enemies. One of these officers was General George C Marshall who became secretary of war after Franklin D Roosevelt was elected president in 1944. Marshall merged the American Air Force with the Army Air Forces which made it a separate service that could fight on three fronts: Europe, Asia, and Africa. Marshall then decided that it would be best for American troops if they were able to learn how to fly planes himself so he ordered the formation of the USAF Technical School at Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama in 1945. This school would teach pilots how to fly planes and flying doctrine so that American troops could fight more effectively overseas. After World War II ended, there were many surplus planes available which were put into storage by various government organizations including NASA. These planes eventually found their way into the hands of airline companies such as Delta Airlines which used them for training purposes until 1978 when they were finally donated to NASA by Boeing Co., Incorporated. Today, over 7600 aircraft are operated by US Airways Group (USAG) which includes flights throughout North America, Latin America, Caribbean, Europe and Asia Pacific regions. All these flights contribute towards providing transportation for over 280 million passengers each year plus cargo transport for businesses and industry clients around the world. Furthermore, many air force jets are also used by civilian airlines such as United Airlines Company (UAL) who operate services between Washington D C and Los Angeles International Airport(LAX).
