Marine gifts have been a part of the Woburn community for many years. In 1875, Mrs. J.H. Lewis donated five fishhooks and two dozen salt tablets to the town. The first Marine Parade was held in Woburn on July 5th, 1886 by the Board of Correspondence of Massachusetts Bay Colony (now known as the United States Postal Service). A spear and usual catch were among the items exhibited by local businesses. The parade was an annual event until 1915 when it was discontinued because of World War I. In 1916, Mayor John Halsey presented a conch shell to Mr. Cushman for his help with restoration work on Faneuil Hall. In 1919, Mrs. Lewis presented a gilded seahorse to Mayor George O’Neill for his work on behalf of Portsmouth Naval Shipyard that had commenced in 1917 at Woburn Point.. In 1922, Captain James Eames gave a model submarine to Mr. Harrington for display at The Boston Tea Party Museum in Quincyport Harbor.. Woburn is a town in Massachusetts, United States. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston-Cambridge-Newton, MA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Woburn is named for John Winthrop, an amateur scientist and Puritan missionary who came to America in 1630 as a religious refugees from England. The first permanent settler in what is now Woburn was Nicholas Weymouth, who arrived in 1638. He founded a small Anglican church on his farm which still stands today. In 1798, Nathaniel Parker Jr., one of the original founders of Harvard University, bought land near present-day Winthrop Street and built his house there; it still stands today as Parker House. In 1814, General George Washington visited Woburn for two days during his visit to New England. When he returned home he ordered all roads leading out of Boston be closed so that the people of Woburn could see him coming and go unimpeded. In 1828, construction began on what would become Mystic Valley Railroad or "the wagon road." The railroad connected with other trains in Boston and brought goods and passengers to distributors throughout New England. By 1840, the rail line had reached Springfield where it connected with buses that took passengers all around Greater Boston until 1970 when Amtrak took over these services making Woburn an unserved stop on their lines. During World War II much activity took place within the town limits including heavy manufacturing such as munitions production at Foxboro Arsenal which continued until 1957 when it was closed due to pollution concerns caused by nearby burning munitions dumpsites). Other significant wartime industries include boat building at Northampton Boatbuilding Company (now known as Huntington Boatyard) which produced destroyer escorts for American forces during World War II as well as submarines manufactured by Westinghouse Electric Corporation at Easton Shipbuilding Yard before they were incorporated into American Motors Corporation (later Chrysler). Winforn's history stretches back even further than this however - its first settlers arrived several years prior on October 15th 1630 when John Winthrop set foot ashore on Plymouth Rock after fleeing from Englands Civil War between Parliamentarians and King Charles I

The second town, Waltham, was located on the north bank of the river Merrimack and was incorporated in 1800.
