In the early 1800s, Woburn was an important military town in Massachusetts. The town was founded by General Israel Putnam and became a major center of artillery production during the Revolutionary War. In 1802, Woburn donated land to the United States Military Academy at West Point in order to provide funding for the academy. The school has since grown into one of America's leading educational institutions. The USMSA currently operates three campuses in Woburn: one on Commonwealth Avenue, one on North Street, and one on South Street. The school also maintains a cavalry squadron stationed in Woburn. The USMSA is home to over 40 different undergraduate and graduate programs, including law, engineering, medicine, architecture, business administration, and international relations. Woburn also played an important role in World War II. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor in December 1941, the USMSA began manufacturing key weapons used in World War II such as artillery pieces and tanks. In 1945, when Japan surrendered following World War II, Woburn donated several thousand war-time artifacts from its collection to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C.. These items are now displayed at the National Museum of American History.

The Woburn Armory was founded in 1798 by Captain John F. Smith and his assistants, Lt. Colonel George H. Dodge and Lieutenant Colonel Samuel M. Tuttle. The armory is the oldestArmory in Massachusetts and one of the earliest armories in the United States. It was first used as a repository for arms and ammunition during the French and Indian War, when Boston had to stockpile arms to protect itself from British attack. The armory served as an Arsenal from 1798-1799 under General Gage's command when Boston refused to disarm aftersurrendering at Saratoga Springs in 1777. In 1815, it became part of militias under Governor Andrew Merriman until it was sold to the town of Woburn for use as a schoolhouse in 1821-1822. From 1825-1828, it was used as a court house before being used as an armory again from 1836-1868 under Mayor John Ayer's administration; it served as an arsenal until 1870 when it closed because of financial problems related to World War I.[1] In 1919, the Woburn Armory reopened under Mayor James J. Foley with new facilities designed by architect Raymond Hood[2][3]. Since then, the armory has been home to many local organizations such asthe Woburn Historical Society andWorcester County Historical Commission[4], among others. The fire that destroyed portions of downtown Worcester on July 15th, 2014 did not damage any building within the Armory complex,[5] however damages were reported to be extensive inside both buildings due to lack of sprinkler systems installed at that time (although this has since been corrected).[6]
Woburn, Massachusetts is a town in Norfolk County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 9,892 at the 2010 census. The town is bordered to the south by Andover and to the north by Northampton. Woburn is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The first settlers in what would become Woburn were farmers who arrived in 1636 from England. The town was chartered in 1768 as a village and grew rapidly due to its location close to the then-new Worcester region that had started growing up around Boston. In 1874, Woburn became an incorporated town under state law and remained so until it merged with Northampton on January 1, 2002. The original settler block for which Woburn is named was built about 1798 by Amos Eaton and his wife Lois Eason on land that they purchased from John Morse Sr., one of the earliest residents of Andover. A plaque on Route 8 near where Eaton's house now stands commemorates this early settlers and their families. The first post office in what would become Woburn opened in 1834, serving honorably until 1881 when it changed its name to Northampton after the neighboring village of Northampton had adopted that name. At that time, all towns within Norfolk County were required by law to have a post office; this policy was abolished beginning with Suffolk County in 1903 under state law). In 1881, mail services were transferred from Northampton to Woburn through a combine operation conducted between both villages despite protests from locals who saw this as an attempt by NorthamptonTo take over their community center which they considered their cultural heritage site! After years of growth (due primarily to increasing trade) during World War II, demand for housing led to rapid annexation into Andover starting around 1951; however during this time there was significant opposition from residents who felt they had been taken advantage of economically while Andover flourished without them whereas Woburn struggled financially even as its annexations continued unabated. After several years of legal battle culminating with a decision by the Suffolk Superior Court aquarium v Town Board case (in which Judge Edward Jaffe ruled against incorporation), annexation finally stopped effective December 15th 1959 following a petition filed by citizens concerned about possible loss of open space necessary for future expansion into neighboring towns if annexation went ahead unvotedly or without proper public hearings given that no vote could be held since incorporation laws did not allow city councils or other bodies having such authority representation on village boards! In 1972 when open space located adjacent to Route 8 between Wellesley Street and South Street was sold off for development purposes (the well-known "Worcester Ring Road" now forms much of said ring road), widespread anger and protest ensued among local citizens against what some saw as blatant disregard for longstanding community concerns about potential development along what constituted one third of their rural border! Many settled complaints included allegations made against developers—most notably local developer Arthur Ashe—of illegally taking private property without giving proper warnings or compensation while also discriminating against minority groups like women who desired homeownership opportunities; Ashe eventually reached a settlement agreement with authorities which allowed him access to slightly over two acres but left most acreage undeveloped because he could not build upon it himself
