Woburn, Massachusetts is a small town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 2,394 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area and has a ZIP code of 02118. Woburn was first settled in 1638 by Increase Mather and his family. In 1847, Woburn became an incorporated town. The growth of Woburn came from industries such as rubber and tire manufacturing, papermaking, lumbering and farming; however, since 2000 the town's economy has been based largely on services such as health care and education. The town is named for James Wigglesworth who served as its first mayor from 1875 to 1888. He also founded the local newspaper which still exists today. Woburn's downtown district features several large employers including US Paper Company (now Adelphia Communications), Myriad Genetics Inc., MIT Media Laboratory LLP and Foxconn Technology Group Inc.. Woburn, Massachusetts is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 26,553 at the 2010 census. Woburn is the largest town in Middlesex County and one of the most populous towns in New England. It is also one of the oldest towns in Massachusetts. The first settlement in what is now Woburn was made on March 14, 1636 by English Puritans under the leadership of Miles Standish. The town was chartered on November 15, 1637 and named after John Aubrey, 3rd Viscount Cobham who had been removed from his seat as Lord Mayor of London for supporting charter revocation proceedings against William & Mary. In 1638-39, Woburn participated in an abortive attack on Lexington by French forces under Colonel André Le Vaillant; this attack failed due to lack of support from local militiamen and troops led by Captain Samuel Adams. In 1692–93 Isaiah Neece built a sawmill complex on the east side of the river that became known as Neece's Mill Pond or "Neeces pond". The mill continued operation until 1845 when it stopped operations due to competition from newer mills dammed up by glaciation around Boston Neck Reservoir. Today only surviving structures are parts of a gristmill dating back to 1711 which still operates; part of an old barn has been preserved as well as some early buildings including a schoolhouse and other outbuildings near Main Street. A post office was established at Woburn on December 12, 1768; it changed its name to Boston on January 1st 1801 following annexation into Boston City government following a referendum vote by residents over whether or not to remain separate. In 1847–48 there were several large waves of migration to rural areas throughout New England brought about by improved transportation links throughBoston's expanding city limits; many people moved westward into what is now Middlesex County (then part of Worcester) because opportunities for land within that county were better than those available elsewhere in New England. By 1860 Woburn had declined again relative to larger settlements nearby such as Springfield or Worcester with only 22 inhabitants compared to more than 400 residents reported for Springfield alone during that year according to US Census data . “It [Woburn] cannot be too much advised that we should spread our wings wide open among all these new settlers...
