The first settlers in what would become Westfield were three men who came overland from England as part of HMS " Pegasus ". They arrived on October 15, 1645 and named their new land after Lord Walden which they saw in the sky above Boston. The men built a log cabin called "Pegasus" on what is now North Main Street. In 1724, John Putnam , one of the original signers of the United States Constitution founded WestFIELD Academy . After he died in 1786 his son Nicholas put up money for school which became known as " Putnam's Academy ". In 1814 Samuel Gridley donated land to build an academy which became known as "WestFIELD". In 1847 John Dolan donated land for a public square that would later become home to both Columbarium (now Knoebel Museum) and nearby First Congregational Church . In 1876-77 $2 million dollars was raised through local giving to build Holyoke Seminary which opened its doors in September of that year . That same year also saw the construction of Whatcom Dam (nowECOWAS Aquaculture Center) across Deer Brook Brook near where today's Little America Shopping Center stands

Westfield, Massachusetts is a town in Suffolk County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 25,752 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Suffolk County andhome to the University of Massachusetts Amherst. In colonial times it was part of New England and became part of the British Isles after Confederation in 1801. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Westfield were white traders from Rhode Island and Connecticut who founded a trading post on an island in Narragansett Bay called Northampton in 1629. They named their settlement after Sir Nicholas Wigglesworth, 3rd Baronet (1592-1665), one of English East India Companys directors during the first years of English colonization in America. From this early period until 1775, when Boston became the capital of British America, Westfield was also its political center; however, it did not become full time chartered town until 1785. In 1836, during Andrew Johnsonís term as President of the United States, Congress passed an act creating Suffolk County and giving it its present borders; Westfield comprised much of eastern Brockton Township then within Boston limits but since southeast Quincy Township had been annexed by Boston by that time there was no longer any need for a separate town for that portion of Brockton Township. At that time all townships except Quincy were consolidated into Boston City under Mayor John A. Macdonald with full powers over all township affairs including elections and taxation without recommendation from either House or Senate which continued until 1949 when they were vested exclusively withBoston City officials through special ordinances granted by Charter No. 331 . In 1872 two new towns were included within Boston City boundaries: Brighton Beach on Long Island and Revere on Cape Cod. These towns shared common facilities such as water supplies and schools but differed mainly in their economic development because Brighton Beach became an affluent suburb while Revere remained primarily agricultural until recently when heavy engineering projects have replaced most farm land with high-density housing developments
