Westfield, Massachusetts is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Worcester–Somerville, MA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what would become Westfield was Nicholas Weymouth who arrived in 1636 from England. In 1821, John Ayer purchased land east of present-day Westfield from Nicolas Weymouth for $1,000. Ayer donated this land to the town for use as a public square and playground. The cornerstone for the first courthouse was laid on July 15th, 1822 by Governor Elias Howe. That courthouse was destroyed by fire in 1865 but replaced with a new one that still stands today. In 1872 Samuel Morse donated land southwest of present-day Westfield to form the Morse School District which now includes parts of both townships within Worcester County and also much of Hampshire and Franklin counties outside of Boston proper. The school district originally served only those residents living near its boundaries but over time it has widened its services to include residents in other parts of Worcester County as well as southeastern Massachusetts and northern Rhode Island. In 1958, Memorial Drive was dedicated as an important connector between the western suburbs ofBoston and eastern Quincy including Westfield which at that time had no sidewalks or access to any local water supply so all citizens were forced to walk their dogs or take buses into Boston proper for drinking purposes. In 1836, the Connecticut River Railroad was built through Westfield, and the town became a part of Worcester. On January 1, 1868, Western Massachusetts School District No. 2 was created out of parts of Worcester and Westfield.
