Westfield, Massachusetts is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 17,957 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest municipality in Worcester County by population and the third-smallest municipality by land area. Westfield is located on the border of Worcester and Leominster Counties. The town was first settled in 1692 by men from England who desired to purchase land east of Boston for their colony. The name "Westfield" originated from a white horse that had been lost during a hunting trip near the present day town of Westfield. In 1812, when Worcester County was created from part of Middlesex County, Westfield became its only incorporated village. The first post office in what is now Westfield opened in 1814. The current downtown core of Westfield dates back to 1888 when it was established as an agricultural markettown named after General John Childs USMC (1787-1856) who fought at Monmouth Court House and elsewhere during the American Revolution. At its peak during World War II it had over 100 businesses including 25 banks and 12 hotels. In 1954, portions of Westfeld Township were annexed into the newly formed city of Worcester while other portions remained unincorporated until 1990. When those portions were annexed into Worcester again in 1990 they became known as parts of "Westford". In 2006, both districts within the city limits – East Worchester District 12th Ward and North Worchester District 11th Ward – voted to become part of neighboring Chelmsford as Essex District 2 with 1% turnout which effectively increased their representation within City Hall from three members to five members. On July 1st 2017 all but one member (the lone representative from South Essex District 3) left City Hall amidst budget cuts due to recession-like economic conditions. Westfield is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 20,912 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Worcester–Fenway metropolitan area. The first settlers of Westfield were men who came overland from England in 1639. They built a small garrison on the riverside and began to cultivate land around it. In 1786, John Gilpin founded what would become Westfield as an agricultural village on the opposite bank of the Wrike River from modern-day Westfield. In 1834, Samuel Gridley organized a group of investors to purchase land that included what is now downtown Westfield and some adjoining areas including today's Collins Park neighborhood and parts of present-day Easton and Northampton townships. Development of this large plot began in earnest during the 1830s under Gridley's leadership; by 1840, about sixty homes had been erected on what became Gridley Heights (now called South Market Place). Today, much of this early development remains intact as part of DowntownWestfield Historic District which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. In 1847, Boston businessman Cyrus Kempton bought property east of Main Street near where he now stands and started developing it into one of Boston's most prestigious neighborhoods with mansions bordering Beacon Hill; later called "Kempton Square". The site now includes many historical buildings not extant before 1978 such as Kempton House (c1792), his wife's house (1796), their son's home (1835), Chase Schoolhouse (1868) and other associated structures dating back to Revolutionary War times. A fire destroyed almost all business buildings in downtown Westfield on November 14th 1930 due to faulty wiring within local electric companies equipment even though there had been no loss or damage reported since 1928! This event inspired entrepreneur Milton Hershey to start his chocolate company here soon after which downtownWestfields redevelopment continued apace with new businesses being opened up like Foxwoods Casino & Resort across Haven Street from Main Street between Baker & Quincy Streets beginning in 1941 followed by Jamba Juice starting out at 11 Elmira Road northwest side just off Interstate 95 before becoming comprehensive throughout both Webster Avenue/DowntownWestfields Commercial Boulevard Corridor extendingalmostto Adams AvenuenorthwestofI-95in1999becomingoneofBoston’slargestdowntownviationsntodate
Westfield was first settled in 1636 by Puritans. The town was originally called Westfielde, but the name was changed to its current form in 1848. In 1853, the town annexed the village of Easton. From 1896 to 1925, Westfield was part of Boston. On July 1, 1925, the town became a separate municipality and it is still a part of Boston today.
