The USAF (United States Air Force) then became operational support organization for NATO forces in what is now known as NATO Allied Forces Southern Europe. In 1951, the USAF assumed responsibility for flying and operating Boeing 727 passenger airline aircraft over North Atlantic routes carrying passengers and cargo between member nations of NATO. In 1957-58, two Boeing 747s were purchased from British Airways and assigned to the USAF's European component at RAF Mildenhall near London; these planes later served as American Airlines' "Airlines 11" and "American 10". These purchases marked the beginning of American Airlines' participation in global transportation regulation within NATO through its subsidiary United Air Lines (UAL). From this point forward, UAL would become an integral player in all aspects of USAAF operations outside of Continental US airspace. In 1990-1991 four McDonnell Douglas DC-9s were acquired from Northwest Airlines/Lufthansa under a contractual agreement that allowed Lufthansa first use of these aircraft on American Airlines mainline services only during embargoed flights into Germany by Lufthansa due to revelations about East German intelligence activities within Western Allies during the Cold War era. One month after acquisition, however, Lufthansa abruptly cancelled all orders placed with McDonnell Douglas because they felt their aircraft were not up to Soviet quality standards! This event forever ended UAL's official relationship with McDonnell Douglas which had lasted since 1958! When Kendall died in 1837, his son John Fenton took over running Kendall & Co.. By 1880, Kendall & Co.'s business had become Consolidated Press Syndicate which published more than 1 million newspapers worldwide before it merged with Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation in 1986. During World War II about two-thirds of all paper used in Japan was produced by Consolidated Press Syndicate; other major users were King Rubber and Humble Tire Works. Afterward Consolidated Press Syndicate turned its attention to international broadcasting with Teletype services from its main office at 6 Beacon Street until its closure in 1972 when personal computers replaced typewriters everywhere throughout industry. In 1984 Monsanto acquired many aspects of Consolidated Press Syndicate including its mainframe computer systems which still run at Monsanto headquarters today as part of their Information Technology Services department
