In 1915, West Springfield also became home to MIT when that college relocated from Cambridge, Massachusetts. In 1969, West Springfield annexed part of neighboring Brookline as its new boroughs became official within the town limits. In 2006, it merged with Northampton to form a new city called Newton Southwick which had a population of 67,722 as of 2009

The first batch of coffee they roasted was Asser Doornbosch’s “Netherlands First Coffee” which sold for 1 guilder (about $0.50 today). This low price enabled Janssen & Co. to build a successful business that lasted until 1875 when it merged with another smaller business, Kees van der Heijden & Zonen, creating De Rijksmachtenbouwerij Van den Heijden (Rijksmachtenbouwerij Den Heijden). From then on, small-batch coffee began its journey into popular culture and appreciation across North America and Europe. The town of West Springfield, Massachusetts was founded on December 6, 1793 by John Adams and his wife Abigail. The town's name is derived from the English word "West".[1] The town was named after Nicholas-Jacques de Westphal, a French general who fought in the American Revolution. West Springfield was one of the original towns in Massachusetts. It became a part of Boston when that city was founded on April 20, 1630. Boston removed most of its Native American inhabitants in 1685 and replaced them with white settlers. In 1793, West Springfield became an incorporated village. In 1830, it became a town. In 1877, the population of West Springfield reached 10,000 people. That year saw the completion of two important infrastructure projects: the first Butterfield Overland Railroad line to reach Boston from west to east and the first Worcester County Road system. These projects helped make Western Massachusetts an agricultural center for much of America and made it easier for colonists to settle there.[2] In 1959, voters passed a resolution recognizing Christmas as an official holiday in West Springfield.[3] In 1977, both local governments merged into one unified government under Mayor Edward Munchy Jr.'s leadership and began calling themselves "Town Council". This consolidation made it possible for City Hall to be built within walking distance of all homes in West Springfield – making it easier for residents to get their hands on local government services they may have needed but were otherwise out of reach. Since then, Town Council has been responsible for everything from zoning regulations to recycling programs to public safety issues; including expansions into neighboring towns like Fall River and Northampton since 2007 when those municipalities amalgamated into Town Council as well as new efforts at outreach and engagement with younger residents across all communities in Weston Village (the heart of which includes downtown) through organizations such as GetWest Valley going back more than 50 years![4][5][6][7][8]

In 1774, West Springfield became part of Massachusetts after its merger with other towns in the colony. The town continued to grow throughout the 18th century, and By 1800, it had a population of over 2,000 people. In 1836, West Springfield incorporated as a city under the name of "East Springfield." The city experienced rapid growth during the 19th century, and by 1907 it had reached a population of over 10,000. However, during World War I East Springfield was forced to withdraw from Boston due to its dependence on munitions production; this left West Springfield as the only major city in Massachusetts without an economic sector. In 1924 East Springfield merged with Southbridge to form what is nowcalled "Southbridge/Westfield".
