The National Guard of the United States was founded on September 20, 1792 as a result of the Second Continental Congress's resolution calling for a national guard to be created "to maintain the British neutrality in America." The first national Guardsmen were recruited from civilian populations and militias in New England. By 1800, there were over 5,000 men in the National Guard serving throughout the nation. However, due to political and financial limitations, it wasn't until 1815 that President James K. Polk established a permanent military force composed exclusively of militiamen from states forming the Union. This change helped increase public support for the military and reduce concerns about American militarism. Since its inception, the National Guard has played an important role in our Nation's history. Today, it is one of the U.S.'s largest reserve armies with over 150,000 soldiers and civilians deployed across America at any given time. The Guard also provides critical resources such as education and training for our police officers and firefighters; disaster relief; security at major sporting events; law enforcement; and many more functions vital to our society. National Guardsmen have served proudly in every American conflict since independence from Great Britain. The National Guard is a federal law enforcement and military force which is separate from the U.S. government but subject to the same Constitution and laws as the rest of the United States. The National Guard was organized on September 12, 1792 when President George Washington ordered all of the states to form militias to prevent an attack by France. The Militia Act of 1792 authorized each state to raise up a regiment of militia, with training and discipline provided by local militia officers. The National Guard was first activated in Vermont on March 14, 1861 when Governor Peter Hine called for volunteers to help protect Burlington from Confederate forces. In 1862, New York raised 5 companies of men under Lieutenant Colonel Augustus Kelley and Captain John Ayer, both from Schenectady County. On July 1, 1863, Rhode Island raised 3 companies of men and Captain Moses Brown became its first lieutenant colonel. On October 20th, 1863 Delaware also raised 2 companies; this was followed on November 15th by Maryland’s 1st company (Captain John Gorman) that arrived in Wilmington Harbor from Annapolisport Naval Yard just before Christmas 1863 On December 6th 1864 Ohio’s Colonel James Murtagh ordered his brigade (1st Brigade) into action at Newport News near Richmond Virginia in support of Union General Robert E Lee during the Second Battle of Bull Run In 1865 the Army abandonedanded disbanded most all armories across America due to funding shortages caused by war exhaustion
West Springfield, Massachusetts was founded in 1795 by the migration of several hundred French-speaking Acadians. The town quickly prospered as a small farming community, and its residents became known for their apple orchards, cheese factories, and other agriculture businesses. The town's population reached 10,000 by 1855, and it flourished until the late 20th century whensevere economic decline caused many West Springfield residents to leave the town. Today, only a few streets remain in West Springfield's original district - most of which have been turned into commercial strips. One of the earliest settlers in West Springfield was Élie Bouchard, who arrived in 1795 from Île-de-France on the far side of the Saint Lawrence River. Bouchard operated a blacksmith shop near what is now Main Street. He also married one of the first women in America – Marie Lachaise – and they moved to West Springfield together in 1801. In 1815 Bouchard started an apothecary business that continues to be run today. The early years of West Springfield were difficult for both sides: The English colonists were hostile toward the French speakers who had settled there; and vice versa. However, over time people grew to hate each othersufficientlysothatviolenceandintensecommunicationbecamea frequent occurrence. One incident that stands out from this period is when two groupsofEnglishmengot into an argument about apples on December 26th, 1796 at Church Street corner where later Samuel Adams would stand accused of startingthe fight with his own men after intervening bystanders tried to break up the altercation). On July 4th 1822 Chief Justice John Marshall delivered his famous landmark speech "Commentaries upon Mr Mason’s Report on Government." In it he outlined how western New York should be divided between Upper Canada (later Ontario) and Lower Canada (later Quebec). This speech helped create tension between Canadaweatherlandersanduppericanspokentowardthemas inferiors while British North American citizens saw Marshall as an important advocate for their interests during this timespan.
West Springfield was first settled in 1639 by Puritans. In 1776, the British burned down the town and marched through it, burning more than 100 homes. The town was rebuilt and renamed West Springfield after General George Washington's headquarters were located there.
