West Springfield, Massachusetts is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Worcester, MA Metropolitan Statistical Area. West Springfield is one of the oldest towns in Worcester County and was first settled in 1786. The original town site was on what is now Main Street between School and Elm Streets. The township of West Springfield was organized on March 4, 1827 from parts of East Brookfield Township and Winthrop Township. On April 25, 1828, it became a full township when part of Northampton Township east of Route 128 came under its jurisdiction. In 1834, West Springfield voted to become an incorporated village by vote of those living within its borders; this incorporation resulted in the name change to West Springfield Village Incorporation. On November 5th 1870, as part of a larger initiative called "Erecting A New Towne" which aimed to promote suburban development throughout Worcester County,[1] voters passed a resolutionocating land north along Centre Street for growth into what would become West Springfield Village (now known as Southglen). This new village had two main square blocks with large homes built around them: One block north on Centre Street ran from Market to Spring streets while another block south from Spring streets served as the main commercial district featuring several stores and restaurants including The Willows restaurant which still stands today. On October 15th 1896 residents of Southglen petitioned for incorporation into West Salem Village Incorporation because they felt that their community could not compete with SouthwickVillage for access to education or social services due to its smaller size and distance from downtown Worcester.[2] On December 6th 1896 incorporation occurred with the rename back toWest Springfield Village Incorporation once again reflecting its satellite-like character although many residents continued to call themselves Southglen Residents until well into the 21st century even though they technically lived in different villages/incorporations

West Springfield is a town in Massachusetts, United States. The population was 5,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield–Worcester metropolitan area. The town was first settled in 1636 by Puritans and their families who had emigrated from England. In 1795, it became part of Worcester County and was incorporated as a town on December 15, 1820. The population peaked at 19,000 in 1930 but has since decreased to 3,711 residents. In 1951, West Springfield merged with neighboring East Amherst to form the new city of Amherst-West Springfield. However, this merger did not take place because the two towns disagreed over which name should be given to the new city. In 1960, West Springfield again merged with neighboring East Amherst to form the new city of Amherst-Easton which also failed to take place due to disagreements about which name should be given to the new city. On February 25th of that year, voters approved a resolution proposing that West Springfield become an independent municipality separate from Worcester County effective July 1st of that year. This proposal passed with 68% support and on March 2nd of that year all three municipalities met in an emergency meeting and agreed upon a plan separating WSB into its own government with voting privileges within Worcester County only; however this referendum failed due to low voter turnout and lack of signatures necessary for passage by law (only 10% were collected).
West Springfield was originally part of the town of Quincy. The first settler in West Springfield was Reverend John Eliot, who arrived in 1784. In 1814, the town became a part of Worcester County and was renamed West Springfield after its location on the western side of Worcester River. In 1832, West Springfield became a part of Massachusetts and was named after President George Washington.
