It is part of the Boston metropolitan area and is bordered by Quincy to the east and Somerville to the north. The town has a history dating back to 1638 when it was part of Charlestown Township. In 1851, West Springfield became its own parish and in 1903 it seceded from Hampshire County. The first post office was established in West Springfield on July 5, 1785 by Captain John Mullenberger with WEST SPRINGFIELD as the name. On November 3rd, 1802, elements of an American Revolutionary Army under General George Washington came ashore at what is now Pierrepont Street in West Springsfield after defeating British forces at Yorktown Heights. On December 15th, 1802 Reverend Josiah Quincy delivered his celebrated Thanksgiving sermon from his home on High Street before a congregation that included President James K. Polk and Mrs. Abraham Lincoln- one year after Washington’s surrender at Yorktown Heights! In 1861, during America’s Civil War, much activity took place around Portsmouth Naval Shipyard just outside of town limits on Mystic River where warships were built for both Union and Confederate armies. ManyWB veterans who fought in this conflict are buried there today including CSS Virginia (1862) CSS Maryland (1865), USS Constitution (1865), USS Maine (1867), USS Buchanan (1870). During World War II many WB residents served in the military including those who fought in Europe and North Africa; over 6500 men had their names engraved on crosses located throughout Worcester County! As hostilities ended FBT began manufacturing parachutes here beginning production on October 14th 1945 which continued until June 30th 1954! In 1957 some families moved out of Winchester while others vacated their homes following construction of Rhode Island Statehouse which replaced one of WB's oldest churches- Trinity Episcopal Church!
West Springfield is a town in Hampden County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 5,965 at the 2010 census. The first permanent settler in what is now West Springfield was John Winthrop in 1630. He and his family founded a small farm on the site of present-day West Springfield High School. In 1786, General David Wooster's army camped on the grounds of the current high school while supplies were being gathered for an upcoming battle with France. As a result of this event and others during that year, West Springfield became known as "Wooster's Camp". The town received its name from General David Wooster himself. In 1828, Captain Amos Hill built a sawmill on the side of Mount Holly Brook to provide wood for local mills around Boston. When President James K. Polk visited Boston in 1848 he stayed at Captain Hill's mill and observed how efficiently the sawmills were run by white men working alongside black slaves who did all the cutting and sanding needed for furnituremaking products such as chairs and tables. This experience inspired Polk to issue a proclamation calling for Slavery be abolished throughout America by 1865. After years of planning by various organizations such as Free Soil Party leaders Nathan Hale and Salmon Pekin, Massachusetts passed an act abolishing slavery on April 25th, 1865 - exactly one week before President Abraham Lincoln signed legislation into law making America a slave country! In 1862 Lieutenant Colonel Augustus Thornton organized 1st Massachusetts Infantry Regiment which served in booth Battle at Gettysburg (July 1863). At Appomattox Court House Major General Robert E Lee surrendered his army to Ulysses S Grant after three days of combat including some bloody hand-to-hand fighting between Union cavalrymen and Confederate infantry under General Joseph Johnston near 2nd Street Bridge over Chickamauga River
