Watertown's history dates back to 1768 and it has been home to two of the first coffeehouses in what is now North America: The Old Peacemaker and The Coffee House. In 18th century England, coffee beans were traded among merchants for goods like cloth and sugar. Because of this, Watertown became known as "The World's Coffee Capital". During World War II, many factories closed down in Boston due to wartime production restrictions, leaving Watertown with a large demand for coffee beans. As more factories reopened after the war, so too did orders for coffee from Watertown residents. This led to Coffee Landlord being founded in 1945 by Bill Ulysses S Grant which became one of the largest and most successful coffee-businesses on Long Island. Today Coffee Landlord continues to operate out of its original building downtown since 1992 while also expanding into new businesses including an online retailer called cyberspace coffeeland and a bakery called Dutch oven bakery & cafe
