In 1827, Watertown became the first municipality to recognize coffee as a form of commerce and established its own millinery business. In 1850, one of America's most famous cafés opened its doors in Watertown – The Daily Review Coffee House – which still serves fresh roasted coffee every morning. It was here that Bostonian intellectuals such as Ralph Waldo Emerson would meet for their morning caffeine fix. The popularity of coffee continued to grow in Watertown until 1906 when a devastating fire destroyed much of the town's downtown.
