In 1795, John Adams founded Harvard University in Cambridge and soon began exporting coffee from his farmstead near Watertown. Watertown is one of three towns in Berkshire County that are part of the Springfield-based Middletown–Watertown micropolitan area. The other two are Northampton and Holyoke. The town was first settled by English people who arrived from Connecticut in 1635. The first permanent home of the town was built on what is now Main Street. The name "Watertown" comes from a stream that flowed through the town until 1814 when it was dammed and its waters diverted to create Wallingford Lake. Watertown's history dates back to 1635 when English colonists arrived in present-day Watertown from Connecticut. They named their new settlement after Sir John Winthrop's home town of Waterbury, which they had visited while on their way northward as part of an exploratory trip led by Captain John Eliot. At first, only men were allowed to live in Watertown; later women also began to arrive and many more houses were erected over time. When the Great Migration started around 1830, many farmers decided to move westward into Ohio Territory because of new opportunities for farming there than they had found east of the Appalachian Mountains. As a result, Watertown became largely rundown during the early years following its founding because most residents chose instead to move away or stay where they were already living rather than start anew with something as new and unknown as a new community could be. However, over time some changes did occur: In 1841 oil wells were drilled near downtown and water supplies became available for local use; moreover, many businesses - such as grocery stores - opened up and gradually grew into what we know today as Watertown's major economic sector (besides agriculture). However despite these positive developments (and others), problems soon arose due to lack of water availability or simply incorrect piping caused by inexperienced local officials who saw things only from their own perspective rather than looking out for everyone involved thereby resulting in large infrastructure projects that often went wrong (e example: building a bridge across an unnavigable stream without taking into account its width).
