In December 2006 voters passed a referendum calling for annexation by Boston if they approved levels set forth by Mayor Thomas Manton which would have allowed for significant financial benefits to Watertown including increased property values tax relief for residents who paid their fair share of taxes since 1959 when Bridgeport became annexed into Boston The dispute continued until December 20th when both towns agreed to annexe together providing that each retains its own governance structure including executive power over budgets and elections without having input from the other . A new $153 million square mile (48 km2) development called River Park has been planned on land adjacent to Wellfleet Harbor since 2007 with plans calls for 1 million+ homes plus jobs ashoreplans include retail stores, dining venues, swimming pools & parkland

The name "Watertown" derives from a small stream that flowed through the town. The first settler in what is now Watertown was Nicholas Goode. Goode built a cabin on what is now Main Street in 1636. In 1754, Samuel Adams founded an academy here which became one of America's most famous schools. Adams also founded Congregational Church in 1757 and notable houses such as John Adams' home on Beacon Hill were built thereafter around this churchyard. In 1814, a group of men led by Colonel Israel Putnam platted what would become Watertown after arriving there with wagonloads of goods from Framingham on October 14th following their trip across New England via watercarriage
