Coffee lovers from all around the world come to Waltham for its rich history and delicious coffee. The city was founded in 1636 by General John Winthrop, who named it after his birthplace, Holland. In 1824, Boston Coffee House closed its doors for the last time but not before leaving a lasting impression on the coffee industry. Today, there are over 30 cafes in Waltham alone that offer unique and delicious cup of Joe. The first cafe inWaltham was called The Dutchman’s Head. It opened in 1851 and served hot chocolate and cigarettes until 1903. In 1865, The Green Dragon Cafe opened its doors with 8 seats and served roast beef sandwiches, eggs benedict, macaroni and cheese,and more. In 1929-1930 The Rialto Café had 12 seats and offered refreshments such as ice cream sundaes and floats down the river on a raft! In 1951-1952 The Athenaeum Cafe reopened after having been closed for two years due to fire damage caused by an exploding gas canister. They served cappuccinos with whipped cream or mocha lattes with whipped cream for $1 each when they open up! Over time they became popular among students because of their large variety of menu items available including salads (including from the salad bar), paninis (with different toppings), soups (made fresh daily), desserts (their famous brownies were made from scratch every day!),and their wide variety of teas/coffee options including instant stouts/pints/teas or decaf roasts/espresso drinks! In 1984-1985 The Artisan Bakery re-opened after being closed for 2 years due to a fire that destroyed their ovens! They again offered cappuccinos with whip cream or mocha lattes with whip cream for $1 each when they open up! At this point they were known as “The Coffee Shop With A Soul” because their goal was to provide quality customer service even though their business was small! Later that year they merged into Starbucks which remained in operation until 1997 when it moved out of town. A few months later in 1985 another coffee shop called Popsicles opened up across from McNeil’s convenience store on Tremont Street! They provided ice cold beverage selections such as milk shakes(Vanilla or Chocolate chip) mixed together with fruit flavors such as raspberry ripple tea Latte & Vanilla Shake combo or strawberry banana split shake combo!. However unlike Starbucks where you could buy food inside the store like pastries or bagels (!?), Popsicles only sold soft drinks which is why today you might see them just outside McNeil’s if you go shopping near campus during lunchtime! This particular spot also housed one of Waltham’s first robots which helped deliver cups of coffee to customers through an automated system back in 1987!! We can all probably remember those days without our ever having seen one!)
