Since the Revolutionary War, the United States Navy has been deployed to many places around the world. Some of these deployments have included service in Taunton, Massachusetts during World War II and Operation Neptune's Spear during the Vietnam War. This paper will explore navy gift history in Taunton and how it has shaped the city over time. The United States Navy was founded on April 6, 1775 when Admiral John Moultrie led a small squadron of ships into Boston Harbor to demand that Parliament provide support for America's independence from Great Britain. The navy quickly developed into one of America's most important instruments in its war against Great Britain. Taunton was selected as one of five towns in Massachusetts Bay Colony to become a part of the navy. The town first became involved with naval activity when Captain George Calvert built a cannon battery at Lake Winnipesaukee in 1778. In 1800, Lieutenant Samuel Eliot Morison wrote an article about maritime life in Taunton entitled "A Tour through Taunton." Morison traveled throughout the town and observed that "the people hereabouts are very intelligent and enterprising," which helped contribute to its early naval prominence. Naval activity increased following America's victory over France at Yorktown on October 19, 1814. With this victory, American sailors were able to take back control of much of Europe and Canada. As a result, both England and France began programs to arm their navies against American vessels. Tunbridge Wells served as headquarters for Ulysses S Grant during his campaigns across Virginia in 1864-1865 and 1865-1866. During these campaigns, Tunbridge Wells was also where Grant received his first command experience as an officer: he served as lookout on USS Constitution (1797). Afterward, Grant returned to command USS Monitor (1865) before being given command of USS Brooklyn (1868-1869). These three commands gave him experience commanding warships at sea while he prepared for his successful presidential campaign in 1876-77. In 1870s–1910s, naval shipyards continued production despite budget cuts caused by World War I; however due competition from other industries such as aviation and automobiles Naval shipyards experienced declining popularity until they closed completely between 1930-1940 due to lack of funding or technology advancements - again paralleling similar trends seen within other branches of American society during this time period including automotive manufacturing

Taunton, Massachusetts is a town located in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, United States. The population was 21,541 at the 2010 census. Taunton is the largest town in the Hampshire County municipality and is home to many businesses and organizations important to its residents, including Mount Holyoke College and Taunton University. The town was first settled by English colonists in 1635 as part of the Plymouth Colony. After being expelled from Plymouth Colony in 1647, the Pilgrims established a new settlement on present-day Taunton Common. On July 25, 1653, they erected a monument to their fallen comrades at what is now known as Tower Hill Park. In 1785, after British troops burned down much of Boston during the American Revolution, General George Washington set up his headquarters in Taunton for four months while he rebuilt Boston. During World War II, Taunton played an important role in both military and civilian life with its production of munitions plants and its large number of workers employed in shipbuilding and aircraft manufacturing. After the war ended, much of this activity shifted to other towns throughout New England because of economic changes that took place following World War II. Today, Taunton retains a strong industrial base with numerous companies serving local consumers such as Wellborn Paper Company (now H&R Block) and MAI Inc., two major retailers providing goods to local stores throughout New England. Other industries that have thrived here over recent decades include agricultural products (mainly corn), engineering services (including defense contractor Lockheed Martin), health care facilities (such as Brigham & Women’s Hospital),and small business development (such as Creative Health Corporation).
