The history of the national guard in Taunton, Massachusetts goes back to 1776. At that time, the town was part of the Province of Massachusetts Bay and it functioned as a militia force. The first national guard unit was organized on December 15, 1776 under the command of Captain John Parker. The unit consisted of one company of infantry and two companies of cavalry. Unfortunately, due to lack of manpower and financial resources, this Unit never saw combat during the American Revolution. However, its members did help fight in other skirmishes and battles throughout the war. In 1805, Taunton became a state seat and the state National Guard was established as part of this process. The Guard was first stationed at Springfield Armory where it served until 1818 when it moved to Pequot Hill near present-day Boston. In 1827, Taunton became an official city and therefore had its own National Guard unit which lasted until 1861 when it merged with Springfield’s unit. Throughout these years, there were always some young men from Taunton who volunteered for service with the Guard or served as assistants to Drillmasters at various units located throughout the city. Today’s active duty members of the National Guard can be found from all corners of Massachusetts; however most are stationed in Springfield or Boston due to their community service efforts or involvement with disaster relief efforts following natural disasters such as Hurricane Sandy or storms like Harvey or Irma. There has been significant growth within both local volunteer organizations as well as within National Guardsmen myself over recent years resulting in increased opportunities for social interaction between active duty soldiers and civilians across New England area! This has been great fun for everyone involved – including those who have spent countless hours training for what may come should an emergency arise (whether that is through active duty military deployment overseas or simply just out walking their dog!) It also provides a unique opportunity for civilians who might not otherwise have access to military-grade equipment (or experience) while also providing some amazing displays/events/demonstrations by our troops on a regular basis!

The first permanent European settlers in what is now Taunton were men from England named Willoughby and his brother John who landed on Cape Cod in 1620. They founded the town of Taunton on July 21st, 1623. There are several versions of how Taunton got its name; one says it originated when three farmers found a large tree with unusual branches near their house and called it "Taunton" after the trees in England. Another story has it that two sailors named Thomas and Nathaniel came ashore on Long Island during the English Civil War and were given land by General William Howe to build a house. When they died young, their husbands left behind homes on Long Island which became known as TaunTON (now Saybrook). Finally, another version has it that John Winthrop, Jr., an investor from London decided to settle in Plymouth because he could not find anyone to manage his new colony after arriving there in 1630.
