The town was founded by General John Stark and his wife Abigail in 1768 as a trading post on the banks of the river Taunton River. It quickly became a military outpost due to its strategic location and access to resources. In 1775, General George Washington sent troops through Taunton on their way to march on Boston. The town was also home to Colonel John Adams’s artillery detachment during that fight. In 1806, Major General Josiah Quincy took command of American forces in Canada and instructed him to send gifts for Canadian officers and enlisted men. He ordered Lieutenant Colonel Amos Kendall to select items such as swords, pistols, ammunition, clothing, etc., for delivery into Canada “as necessary for their comfort and use while stationed there.” Kendall delivered more than 1,000 gifts over two years. During World War II, many soldiers from Taunton served in various units across Europe and Asia. Some of these soldiers received medals or other honors from their countries’ militaries. One soldier from Taunton who received distinction was Captain Harry Mansell who was awarded three Distinguished Service Medals (DSMs) by Japan’s Imperial Army First Division Commander-in-Chief Yoshihide Suga during ceremonies held at Tokyo Station in 1945. Captain Mansell is also recognized with a Japanese civilian award – the Order of Japan – which is given for exceptional service rendered by civilians during wartime periods.)

Taunton is a town in Massachusetts, United States. The population was 27,475 at the 2010 census. The center of town is named for Samuel Taunton, an early settler. The first organized settlements in present-day Taunton dates back to 1639 when colonists from England arrived and began to settle in what is now the town. Over time, the native people of the area gradually lost their way and were replaced by English colonists. In 1764, a group of settlers led by Captain John Winthrop founded a small trading post on the confluence of the Rivers Androscoggin and Narragansett, which became known as Winthrop's Station. During Queen Anne's War (1702-1704), Taunton was part of Patriot General Francis Marion's army that invaded New England. In 1705, after besieging Boston for two months, Marion retreated to Taunton with his army and destroyed most of its infrastructure before returning home two weeks later. And so it went until 1775 when British forces invaded America again under King George III and captured Boston without battle or fight - thus terminating one era of American history while beginning another: that of British colonial rule over North America. In 1781 Taunton became part of Worcester County when it was created from parts of Middlesex and Worcester counties。 It remained within Worcester County until 1959 when it became part of Middlesex County again following a split in that county between north and south sections along Long Island Sound. In 1868–69 an act was passed by Congress making Taunton one section within Middlesex County; this gave rise to its current name—Taunton being derived from "township" (originally "trucker"). At various points over its history, local officials have chosen different spellings for various townships within Middlesex County; this has resulted in several confusionary situations including residents mistakenly thinking they are living in different places! The town of Taunton, Massachusetts was first settled in 1638 by English colonists. The town grew rapidly during the early 17th century and by 1653 it had a population of over 120 people. It was renamed Taunton in 1681 after Lord Taunton, an English nobleman. In 1775, during the American Revolutionary War, the town sided with the United States against Great Britain. After the war, many of the British soldiers who had fought in the conflict were discharged from service and moved to Taunton. The town also gained notoriety for its large number of Loyalists who stayed in Massachusetts despite the war.
