Taunton, Massachusetts is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 12,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area and was founded by Puritans in 1630. Taunton's history can be traced back to 1630, when the town of Taunton was settled on an island in the River Greatawe by men from Plymouth Colony. In 1795, Taunton became part of Worcester County and in 1819 it became part of Middlesex County. The first settler in what is now Taunton was John Winthrop who arrived there with his family in 1630. Winthrop had been sent from England as one of the Pilgrims and decided to settle down after experiencing some harsh conditions during their journey home. He built a small house on Squanto Island near where he would live for the rest of his life. Other early settlers included Increase Mather and his wife Rebecca (née Mayhew). Mather ran a woolen textile business which proved very successful and allowed him to give many away to impoverished colonists throughout New England. He also served as mayor of Boston from 1712-1716 and governor from 1723-1725. During this time he developed close ties with James II of England who resided nearby at Roxbury Palace at that time. Mather's grandson Samuel died young while serving as colonel in America during the Revolutionary War but left behind two homes – one near Springfield, Massachusetts and another on Mill Pond Brook near Woburn MA In 1700 John Hancock set out from reactor village along theow river for what is now Watertown After weeks long travel they reached their destination on January 15th 1700 when they arrived at Singing Hillsborough about 20 miles upriver From here it continued further upriver until they reached Weymouth on February 10th 1700 . From here it began its gradual descent back downriver until finally reaching Redbridge On April 8th 1700 . Here they found shelter under friendly trees before continuing their journey downstream towards Ipswich On April 15th 1700 They finally arrived safely ashore at Ipswich Harbor There were over 100 passengers including Captain John Smith who captained HMS Enterprise during her successful crossing over troubled waters
