Taunton, Massachusetts is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 7,554 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The first permanent English settlement in Taunton was made on the corner of High and Boylston Streets in 1630 by John Winthrop and his group of Puritans. The town's first mayor was elected in 1701. Taunton grew rapidly during the 18th century as waves of immigrants arrived: Germans in 1748, Irishmen in 1768, Poles in 1800, Italians (from Tuscany) in 1827 and Russians (from St Petersburg) in 1834. In 1835 Taunton became the seat of Worcester County. In 1860 Taunton annexed what were then parts of neighboring townsAMcdonough and Walthamstow; these towns had been separate since the early 19th century when they were part of Middlesex County). In 1967 Taunton adopted its current name after its incorporation into Worcester County as a result of state legislation designed to prevent unincorporated communities from having their own namesakes which would conflict with those of incorporated municipalities within their borders. The Town has a rich history that can be traced back to 1630 when John Winthrop and his group founded the first permanent English settlement in America on high ground just east of present-day Taunton Square - now part of downtown Worcester - for religious reasons following his conversion to Christianity from Islam about one year earlier around Pawtucket Plantation near Providence Rhode Island . At first only men were allowed to live there although over time others including women also came and worked side by side with men until it eventually became known as "Winthroptown" or simply "Winthrop". The original settlers built small cabins surrounding an open square today called "WinthropSquare" where they met for prayer meetings evening and morning before going about their day... this meeting place still exists today across High Street from present-day First Baptist Church buildings dating back to 1870! Eventually other settlements sprang up all around this large central square providing homes for menfolk along with market gardens, millsinery shops &farms & warehouses etc., creating what is today known as "Old Town", while new neighborhoods sprung up further west along High Street between Union & Charter streets forming what is now Downtown Worcester!
