It lies on the southern shore of Lake Winnipesaukee and is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The town was first settled by people from New England in 1630 as part of the Roxbury Colony. The name "Taunton" comes from "TAUNTON", an ancient place near Dorchester, England which means 'the meadow'. The first settler to arrive in what is now Taunton was Samuel Maverick who arrived with his family in 1630. He built a small house on the east side of present-day Main Street and called it Maverick's Hill. After several years he sold his land to John Winthrop who purchased it from Maverick for $2 per acre. Winthrop founded what would become Taunton Academy (now MIT) in 1635 and named it after himself, George Washington's hometown of Mount Vernon. In 1714, Wm Stratton moved to Taunton and began farming that tract of land between Center Street and Meeting House Road which became known as "Stratton's Meadow". In 1724 John Alden married Abigail Adams daughter of Jonathan Edwards and her husband Nicholas Choate located some miles west of Taunton on property that later became Choate Farmsteads National Monument. They were responsible for much early development within the town including building mills around 1805-10 along with other types of industry such as shipbuilding during Congressionallymandated peacetime efforts to build munitions plants inland during World War I During Jedediah Morse's lifetime (1838-1849), he leased from Joshua Gridley 400 acres south central section northeast cornerage line extending thence 1/4 mile northwesterly to meetinghouse road, bounded by woods one half mile wide except for rightmost corner where open space 3 rods square containing 4000 bushels corn; also leased 100 acres east side or about midway between junction line with Mass Pike & Eastern Railroad extending northerly 2 1/2 miles thence easterly 1/4 mile to Marshfield Rd., bounded by woods two thirds thereof width excepting one third therein containin 500 bushels corn; also leased 100 acres west side or about midway between junction line with Mass Pike & Eastern Railroad extending northerly 2 1/2 miles thence easterly 1/4 mile to Marshfield Rd., bounded by woods two thirds thereof width excepting one third therein containin 2000 bushels corn; all these lands were conveyed hereafter unto Captn Ayer Mayflower Ownership Company underwritten Nov 15th 1836’ following written agreement made at Ipswichport Meeting Place Dec 14th 1835 BetweenCaptn Ayer Mayflower Ownership Company And Joshua Gridley Secretary Thereby Assuring That Said Lands Were Not Reserved For Another Person And That said company Would Not Be Interested In Any Other Property Which Was Leased By Captn Ayer Mayflower Ownership Company Until Such Time As Said Lands Became Unconveyable Being Necessarily Reasonable Compensation For All Outright Costs Associated With This Agreement . From this beginning until 1861 when Captain James Hickey took over management there was only one owner - Captn Ayer Mayflower Ownership Company-. In 1861 when Captain Hickey left office there were three owners - Captain James Hickey, Mrs Hickey (widow) AND Captn Alfred Purdy - until Purchased By The General Electric Corporation On July 21st 1947 . From then until 1971 there was only One Manager - Captn Alfred Purdy-. However due to various factors including technological advances new companies have been formed including NEC Corporation (1986-) and Infineon Technologies Corporation (1994-) These companies are still active today although their primary focus has changed numerous times over the years including being involved in many different types of industries

Taunton is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The history of Taunton goes back to 1635 when English colonists arrived in what is now Middlesex County. The first settler, John Winthrop, founded a trading post on Great Falls Creek near present-day Taunton. Trailer parks and other small businesses dot the downtown area today; most of these were built between 1960 and 1980 during an era when manufacturing was strong in southeastern Massachusetts. Although it lost its textile industry around 2006-2007 due to global competition, Taunton has remained a center for science and technology as well as health care and education since then. In recent years, there have been efforts to revive commercial activity in downtown Taunton; however this has not yet led to significant economic development or population growth on account of it outside forces (such as tourism). Taunton, Massachusetts, is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1636 by Puritans and became an American town on January 1, 1781. Taunton is located on the border of Worcester County and Somerville County. The first permanent settler in what would become Taunton was Caleb Winnisop who arrived with his family from Rowley, England in 1636. He built a small cabin and named it Winnisop's Cabin after himself and his brother-in-law William Winnisop (1612-68). Other early settlers included John White (1597-1672) who built a house on Main Street near where Post Office Square now stands; Samuel Alden (1598-1675) who platted what is now Watertown; Nicholas Rose (1709-) who erected two houses on Meeting Street near present day High School; Moses Brown (1711-) who platted part of what is now South Falls Road; Isaac Goodspeed (1714-) who erected a log cabin on the wharf overlooking the river at the site of present day Middle School; Jonathan Putnam (1721-) whose home still stands as one of Taunton’s most notable landmarks; Increase Mather (1725-) ; James Harvey Sr. haplogroup E1b1a1 from Norwich, England settled about 1750 married Ann Pemberton (); Increase Mather Jr., grandson of Increase Mather II had established Roxbury Farms about 1785 upon purchase from Colonel Ebenezer Chandler for $10 per acre (). There were also some German families such as Friederich Brentlauer (* 1580 - † 1645), Johann Friedrich Kapp (* 1593 – † 1664), Gottfried Wilhelm Kapp (* 1600 –[?], died young *) and Jost Balthasar Kapp (* 1600 –[or] 1647)]. In 1700 there were only seven households in Taunton when newcomer George White removed with his family to Northampton because he could not find land to farm east of Boston. In 1800 there were 145 settlers living in Taunton according to the 1801 Connecticut Census enumeration list compiled by Samuel Chase & Company which counted 2 persons over sixteen years old each employed full time farming: "George White", "uben Housman" & "Hannah Davenport". From this initial group many more came over time including David Whitcomb (-1841), Unitarian minister Amos Kendall (+1835), Cotton farmer Elijah Woods (+1802/3), cooper Nathan Smith (+1800+) and brewer Lemuel Higginson (= ? - [c. 1830]), among others On July 20th, 1781 during peace negotiations between Great Britain and America following their war for independence against King George III, General John Adams proposed that all men should be granted equal rights under the United States Constitution regardless of color or race due to long standing grievances against British policies which discriminated against colonists based on their ethnic background! This proposal gained favor with both factions within Congress leading to ratification by default without debate or public vote preceding its enactment into law! On October 25thTaunTON officially became an American Town!!!
