The Taunton Coast Guard Station has been a part of the community since 1892. The station was originally known as the Depot on Main Street, and was renamed in 1907 after Captain John H. Rackham. In 1916, the Coast Guard Station moved to its current location on Park Avenue in Taunton and became one of the first municipal government agencies in Massachusetts. In 1947, a new building was dedicated at the Coast Guard Station. This building served as the Headquarters for many years until it was replaced by today’s Administration Building in 2006. The old Headquarters building is now used as an Auxiliary Firehouse. The Coast Guard Station played an important role during World War II when it operated from temporary facilities located at various locations along Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard. During that time, Taunton received 8 military personnel who served with distinction including 2 Medal of Honor recipients! Since its inception, the Taunton Coast Guard Station has responded to numerous emergencies including: hurricanes (1948-1953), flood disasters (1970-1978), tornado outbreaks (1981-1985) and snowstorms (1991-1994). Additionally, the station has created opportunities for service by providing education through instruction/demonstration programs aboard vessels and conducting safety patrols off shore while also providing support to local businesses and residents during events such as Fourth of July picnics or Christmas concerts.
