Taunton is one of the oldest towns in New England and has been inhabited since 1630. The original name for the town was "Worchester". In 1786, Taunton became a separate municipality from Worcester. The first white settler in what would become Taunton was Capt. John Eliot who purchased land in 1630 from Squanto, an Indian scout and later Chief of the Wampanoag tribe. Eliot built his home on present-day Main Street and named it after himself - Eliot's Hill or Eltons' Hill (the name remains today). According to legend, Eliot had two daughters by his second wife - Abigail and Hannah - but they died young before he could have children by them. In 1786, when Worcester became a separate municipality from Taunton due to increasing taxes caused by increased trade with neighboring towns such as Worcester and Springfield, Captain John Eliot donated land east of High Street (now Route 128) which would become part of Taunton's present-day downtown core. He also donated $10 to each household in each township for school purposes until 1820 when that system was replaced by a store public subscription system known as "The Townshend System" because its founder Major General Nathaniel Shelden endowed it with that name – thus beginning what would be known as Townshend Elementary School (renamed Holyoke Middle School in 1988). After years of debate over which town should receive the primary benefit from The Townshend System donation –kindergarten through grade 12 –Taunton voters decided overwhelmingly to keep their high school open until after both community colleges opened their doors nearby in 1970! Today much of downtown #Taunton retains parts of Captain John Eliot's original home including some lovely 3-story Richardsonian Romanesque Revival Mansion houses built between 1892–1894 just feet away from where I am standing!
